"Lindy Hop" on Dancing with the Stars

My teachers (Dan and Tiff, national lindy hop champs) have said it started around 1927. I don't doubt that it's been done ever since, but note that the articles are from the 30s and 40s.

"Lindy Hop" on Dancing with the Stars

This sounded like a bad idea when they announced it. I just didn't realize how bad. It was probably unfair to ask the dancers to teach a dance and the judges to judge a dance they didn't know, but five minutes' research would have cleared up some misconceptions. Apparently, that was five minutes...

    Costume vs. natural

I'm sensitive about looking like I'm wearing a costume, even though I've never gotten a negative comment about wearing vintage or vintage inspired clothes. Probably, the main reasons I don't get negative comments are that I don't wear offbeat things like poodle skirts or hairdos of a thousand...

My trip to Milan: fashion window views

Just-above-the-knee on me shows just enough muscle to make me look like a gladiator. And I think I have good legs.

My trip to Milan: fashion window views

The navy/cream combination looks crisp without being harsh. I like how the outfits define the waistline: the skirts are flared and there's extra fabric at the top of the bodices (ruffles, collars, scarves, shirred sleeves). It's a nice alternative to shoulder pads.

My trip to Milan: fashion window views

Some very nice clothes. :) The prints and the jackets are especially nice. That shade of orange seems to be the latest thing. Glad I stocked up on deep pink while it had a run.

Is the vintage crowd the curmudgeon crowd?

I was never able to stay up late, so I don't miss it now. And before I started dancing in 2002, what was there to do at midnight besides sit on a bar stool? I'd rather look at the inside of my eyelids.

If "vintage" became the style of the next decade would you change yours?

No, I wouldn't change my style if vintage were the style of the next decade. I might change it afterward, though--I've never thought that being ten years out of date was a good look.

    Why are wrinkles undesireable?

The older you get, the more your appearance has to do with your attitude. Among older women, it's easy to spot sourpusses by their frown lines. Dr. Christine North says that if a woman doesn't resolve anything that is bugging her during menopause, aging (not just wrinkles) sets in with a...

    Dress Like the Great Depression!

If I were interviewing someone in a hot room (and aren't most businesses air conditioned?) I'd invite them to take off their jacket and offer them a cold drink out of courtesy. Nothing we do at our accounting office requires heat tolerance.

    20s Revival in the 50s?

I'm reading a book called Rome 1960 about the 1960 Olympics. At the opening ceremony, the American wore boaters.

Is the vintage crowd the curmudgeon crowd?

Vintage or no vintage, I have to be at work at 8 am. I had tons of fun when I was staying out late dancing three nights a week, but got tired of going to work tired and bleary-eyed.

Does the search function really work?

Yesterday I did a site search for someone and then posted the link from the top of the browser. When I clicked on the link, it just gave me a list of new posts.

Is anyone else on their death bed? The Flu Thread.

When I read your previous post, I nearly suggested that you go to a hospital. A bacterial infection and the flu--real influenza--is more than enough to kill someone without a hardy consitution.

'La Vien En Rose' Edith Piaf film

Even her Best Friend Got Tired of her and Left I mostly agree, although I never wished her to die. While I thought the acting, casting, sets, music, costumes and makeup were all outstanding, it was a depressing movie. Ms. Piaf must have known one happy day in her life--couldn't they have...

Does the search function really work?

Do You Have Trouble with Site Searches? I don't, but I'm curious about those who do. Several members have mentioned searching for basic things and not finding them. I'm starting this thread in hopes of helping to resolve the problem. Some information might help: What browser do you use...

    Funeral processions

Maybe the drivers passing couldn't tell is was a funeral procession. I don't think I'd be able to spot a hearse several blocks ahead of me.
