The general decline in standards today

School bullying was an interesting experience for me. Was I picked on? Yes. Was I picked on or bullied by a LOT of people? No. Usually it was the same one or two or three people. But on the other hand, for reasons I never fully understood, a lot of people stood up for me and I...

What pens are we carrying today?

I'll go get the straitjacket. Today I'm carrying my gold Waterman, my Watmerman 52/Swan "Frankenpen", and my sterling silver mystery pen.

    "Too good to use..."

One has to wonder how much family silver is actually real silver (as in Sterling, or something along those lines). And how much has that prestigious hallmark of "EPNS".

    Show us your vintage home!

Those old high-tank toilets are pretty neat. Is the commode itself an antique/vintage one, or is it modern? Some of those antique toilets from the Victorian/Edwardian era had really interesting names. The Vortex, The Ajax. I think there was another one called the Typhoon or something.

    Antique Hot Water Bottles

For anyone who's a little confused, this is an actual muff: The muff is that cute little furry thing that she's got her hands into. They were designed to keep ladies hands warm when their skirts or dresses didn't have pockets, and/or they didn't have gloves. For women worried about their...

    Antique Hot Water Bottles

It's supposed to be Spring here in Australia. I'm freezing. It feels like the middle of Winter. One of the curses in living where I do, is that we get the icy storms and cold fronts fresh off Antarctica, and that causes the temperature to drop like a stone down a mine-shaft. To keep warm...

Rue, I love the cute little breakfast nook. I'd love something like that.

    "Too good to use..."

Surely you mean another guy's trash? I'd be wary of a guy coveting some other fellah's 'junk'. And yes, there is a big difference between "use" and "abuse". We really should consider which of the two we mean, and which of the two we use in this context of 'too good to use'.

    "Too good to use..."

You haven't seen some of the pen-nibs that I've had to beat the dents and dings out of. Nothing is "too good to use". You can use whatever you like. It's a matter of how well you look after it. I could easily destroy my typewriter if I wanted to. But I treat it with care and attention. I...

    "Too good to use..."

To me, nothing is "too good to use". I use everything I buy, no matter how old it is. Otherwise why would I waste the money on it? I have vintage straight-razors. I use them. I have antique pens, some of them over 100 years old. I use them. I have an 80-year-old typewriter on my desk. I use...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

How about "Full steam ahead!"? When's the last time you boarded a ship that was actually steam-powered? That square frame holding the cannonballs is a 'brass monkey'. In extremely cold weather, the brass shrunk, causing the balls to become unstable, and roll all over the place.

    Sellers in Australia

In Melbourne, the best-known sellers of vintage clothing are: Out of the Closet (Flinders Street, opposite the station). American Vintage (imported from the 'States). Smith Street, just north of the City. It's hard finding stuff that fits, when you're as small as I am, but their stuff is...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

I've been watching the old 1930s-1940s Charlie Chan movies, Hollywood's attempt to battle Asian racism and the yellow peril. A noble effort, but the attitudes of the time are still very apparent in every film.

I'm not religious, so yes, phenomenally so.
