Shoe shine:Do your own or take out??

My cousin is in the army. He used a similar method to polish his boots, using a candle and a spoon. I think it's supposed to be an effect similar to ironing, to get rid of creases and such, in the leather. Although I've never understood its actual purpose/effect.

Shoe shine:Do your own or take out??

I don't do it often (bad boy!), but when I do, I usually polish/clean my own shoes. In my entire history, I don't think I've ever had my shoes professionally shined.

    What's Your Vintage Skill Set?

Those old sewing-machines are easy to use. You'll master it pretty quick. Hmm. Vintage skills... I can cook food the old-fashioned way, sans microwaves and instant-food packs. I recently got back into the habit of eating oat porridge for breakfast - something I haven't done regularly since I...

Music that Should be in a detective movie

To me, nothing beats "Harlem Nocturne" or "Rhapsody in Blue" for big-city detective stuff. Post No. 4,900!

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Thanks for all the replies, folks. The Panama didn't start out being a beater, but the way things are going, it may well end up being one!

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Yes, the same one which is in the "Hats & Drinks" thread. I was in downtown Singapore and a sudden downpour caught me totally off-guard. I ran two blocks to the nearest subway station and by the time I got there, the hat was soaked through!

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

It's been through a fair bit, I can assure you! It was a cheap, flea-market purchase. Mid-range quality Panama. It's been rained on extremely heavily, it's been washed, scrubbed clean, dried, it's been blown off on more than one occasion, it's played in a busy intersection at least twice...

    Show us your waistcoats/Vests?

I really like that third one. You wore it to last year's Pen Show, didn't you?

    What are you wearing today??

The weather is getting decidedly warmer over here. Time to break out the summer clothes. Light, bright, casual and airy is the order of the day.

    Vintage Stain Fighters!

Spring and summer are fast approaching. In preparation, I took out a number of my summer shirts today to decide which one to wear out to dinner with the family tonight. To my horror a number of them were marked on the collars with old perspiration-stains which had not been shifted in previous...

    Harking for a simpler time.....

I'm beginning to wonder if Lizzie is mixing manners and/or etiquette with customs and/or traditions. While I'm well aware that people still read the Post books today, they were written over 80 years ago. While certainly a good deal of what's in those pages is relevant to modern society, there...

    What's for Dinner?

Should it be pot-luck for sake of convenience? No meals from recipes or dishes after a certain date?

What's something modern you won't miss when it becomes obsolete?

Also agreed. Also, Neckties, and their relations, the bowtie and cravat, were invented to hold shirtfronts closed. But these days they're purely decorative.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I remember when that ad came out. It caused a LOT of controversy, from what I recall. I know what you're talking about. The sacks used on those mail-runs were all specially-designed and made. Ordinary sacks of the time were not sufficient, since the speed of the train meant that the hook would...
