Stapled Stetson?
Hopefully even Stetson in the 70s wouldn't have stapled a leather hatband together in such a wonky way. Although, you are right, I have seen some pretty funky items from Stetson in those days, especially during the Urban Cowboy phase. I really miss all those feathery bands...
Hat band marks
That's a real shame. Only a knucklehead would glue a leather hat band to the outside of any hat. You may have to take a razor blade to the glue marks, I don't know if they'll just clean off. They may need to be shaved or scraped off. The other marks are the reason I caution...
Thanks Boys
I don't mean to ding Optimo in any way, everyone makes mistakes, even the big boys. This is my fourth hat in a row I've sent for new sweat and/or blocking, and other than arriving a bit bent out of shape, they've been great, super fast turnaround. Like I said, my hats are big, 7...
Yes
Didn't want to flame a great company, but the aghast smiley emoticon matches my face when I saw it. I sent it in for a sweatband replacement, they did some blocking and said they might need to put a replacement ribbon on. The wide ribbon was not a pleasant surprise, nor was the old gold...
Check the website
Fluteplayer - go to the Tumwater Hats website, and if you order, let him know you're on the Lounge, you may get a small discount. I found Tony to be top-notch to work with, and by far the best communicator I've ordered a custom from. He sent pictures and consulted with me...
Brim Cutter
TRF - while others have had success with the scissors method, I prefer to use a brim cutter. The one I have trims 1/8" I believe, and is perfect every time, which I can't say for the few I've trimmed with scissors. It cost $40 or $50 bucks from Hawkeye Tack, but has been worth...
Crash and Burn
Just got my GTDean-provided Stratoliner back from Optimo. Photos pretty much say it all. Frank

Pretty Close
That looks like every Akubra Campdraft in Silverbelly I've seen. Stetson has some cowboy hats in this color that they call Ranch Tan now. Frank
Joel and Ethan Coen
I was really not excited about this at all until I read that the Coen brothers were in charge of this remake. Now I'm okay, as I am a huge fan of their movies. I love Jeff Bridges in just about everything, but True Grit is a tough one. Hopefully, it'll be just enough...
Kangol
I've got the "Tropic" model of that hat in a medium grey, which is a soft, open-weave hat that's my beach hat. Public beaches in Southern California are not where you want to leave a fine Panama or felt hat laying on your towel. I spend most of my day in the water bodyboarding, so I...
Mid-Fogey
Yes, he was from a New York family that came over on a vessell called "The Spotted Cow" from Amsterdam in 1663. There were many Bogerts from then on, in the Bronx, Harlem, all over New York. His son is my icon photo. Great research. I wish my grandfather was still alive to ask...
Stetson Milan
I've got two Stetson Milan Lattes, one in Sand, and one in grey. I believe it is a poly-straw, which means it's not overly stiff, and you can get it wet. I like them both very much, and they have a cloth sweatband that is extremely comfortable. Bound brim, can be worn up or...
Good Looking Hat
I agree, the lady that runs things there is super nice. I had them do a conversion from a fine old American Hat Co. western I had for 20 years, and I believe they used the same fedora block, because the crown looks exactly like your hat. They did a good job, but you can tell...
Open Road
Mr P - you wear the Open Road cattleman style really well. It doesn't suit everybody, but it sure looks natural on you. Still my favorite way to see an Open Road or a Campdraft. Frank
Resistol, new porkpie
Most days, my Optimo-ed Resistol Twenty in a genuine 7 7/8.[/IMG]
This morning, the postman brought me an eBay Beaver Brand 4" brim vaquero/bolero hat, which promptly got turned into the porkpie I've been needing for a while now. Just under 2", 5X beaver, western felt...
Screws
Don't know what they are really called, but most leatherworkers call them "Chicago Screws" for some reason. Griff - a word of advice from someone who has made many belts and other tack with these screws - they are prone to unscrewing themselves over time, and can come out at just the...
Western Store Stretching
Be wary of the western store stretching. I took a hat to my local western store to stretch out a bit, and when I came in to pick it up, I found a kid holding it over a steamer, using the same exact HatJack type stretcher I had at home. They charged me $15 for a crummy...
