Ruby Rock Band
Whenever I see the Oswald/Ruby photo, all I can see is the parody somebody posted on the net of them all playing instruments which have been Photoshopped into their hands, with the facial expressions remaining the same. I love the way the law back then wore their hats. Frank
The Quiet Man
John Wayne and Ward Bond both sport dark hats with front AND rear dents in the first half of this movie. It's something I've seen lots of times, and is frequently done on western hats, from a "mule kick" to full-on rear pinches or dents. I do it to a lot of my taller "Montana...
Interesting
This is good news for me, since I own and wear many western hats. I've never liked Akubra's "cowboy" hats, because for some reason, pure rabbit fur just feels hotter than hell on me when I'm working. Maybe I'll be able to throw some of my Resistol and Stetson money in another...
Unless your photos are much darker,
I wouldn't call that Estes Tan. I've always seen Estes Tan as more like Akubra's version of Silverbelly. Your OR looks like a mid brown or fawn of some kind. Nice hat either way. Frank
When did Stetson Stop the 25?
I also recently won an Open Road that is marked as a Twenty Five. When did Stetson stop this designation? I'd love to get a time frame for the hat I bought as well. It's at Optimo right now for some upsizing and cleaning. Thanks, Frank
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
I just saw that movie again. It's got too many good character actors to name, Slim Pickens, Katy Jurado, Harry Dean Stanton, Chill Wills, R.G. Armstrong, Emilio Fernandez, Luke Askew, L.Q. Jones, Jack Elam, Dub Taylor, etc.... One of my favorite movies, and...
A few stitches
Lots of us that wear western hats put them crown-down when we take them off, which means your band will come off. I always attach mine with one or two strategically placed stitches in thread the same color as the hat. I don't stitch the whole thing down, just a "keeper" or two...
Nostalgia ribbon
Two inches exactly. I didn't want to wait for one of the hat stores to get one in my size from Stetson, so I called the Garland outlet, had one in my hand about five days later, at half the price. I think you'll be pleased. Call the outlets first, you might get lucky. It's...
Not as tough as my Akubras
It may not stand up to weather like the many Akubras I've owned, but my Nostalgia is more comfortable than most of them. Not a knock on Akubras at all, they are the best value going in new factory hats in my book. The sweatband, combined with the soft felt of my...
Nostalgia
I love my Nostalgia, because of the shape and dimensions, and the open-crown option. It's one of my favorite hats. Having said that up front, it does not measure up felt-wise with any vintage hat I own, and is not one that I would subject to the elements much. The felt is less...
No Worries, VitaminG
Check out the statue at the Stevie Ray Vaughan Memorial in Austin - they even put his "vaquero" hat on his permanent image. I saw him wear lots of funky hats when he was younger, but I guess people kind of expected the flat hat look in his later career, just like the...
You Lose Some....
This one was a heartbreaker. I bid the little bugger up way past my comfort zone, since 7 3/4 is hard to find. Too tight to begin with, but the main issue was the seller forgot to mention some pretty obvious mothbites. Nothing too horrible, but enough to keep me from...
Stevie Ray
Vitamin - I'm sure you're right, and I myself saw SRV wear many different hats, but in general, that hat style became his go-to onstage style in the mid 80s up until his death. I can say that with some certainty, because although he took a lot of photos in different styles, I...
It's still full-on summer here.
I wore my silverbelly Campdraft to a local music festival because I needed a big brim to throw some shade, and did not want to wear a cowboy hat with shorts. I was pretty comfortable during the 100-plus degree afternoon, although I did have the liner out. Even...
Another Texas Legend
The late great Stevie Ray Vaughan - rarely on stage without his trademark pimp/vaquero hat, usually with an outrageous plume. When I met him not long before he died, he was wearing a purple version of this hat, with a big red feather, and managed not to look silly at all...
Shark lasts forever
I've got a pair of Paul Bond customs that I've had since I was eighteen, and the uppers have nearly worn out, while the shark foot is just like it was the day I received them. I might feel bad for the sharks if I needed to buy a new pair, but these have lasted almost thirty...
