    Senator Jack's brush with greatness

McCartney's still around? I learn something new all the time here.

Just Who Can Wear a Uniform?

I gave my uniforms away long ago. I don't care who does what with them. Cute pics, BTW. :)

    We're here because...

When I arrived here, I never would have guessed how much some guys knew about clothes. There's a sticky in the OB called "Historically Great Threads" with links to threads that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know, and then some, about vintage clothing and grooming.

    CONTEST: Name my baby!

As I recall, Eugenia and Victoria were the names of two queens at the time. What would we have now--Elizabeth Noor? Beatrix Latifah? NOTE: these aren't my entries. I stand by Felicity.

Air Conditioning in the Golden Era

You mean those little triangular windows you could push out? I loved those! Eventually, you might have had to put a matchbook in the latch to get it to stay shut, though.

Who Did You Just See Live?

The Queen City Jazz Band. They play mostly fast 20s songs, but they've been adding different tempos to their repertoire. During their past two gigs I've been to, they've played "Hound Dog"--a 1953 R&B hit by Big Mama Thornton. The band's singer sounds a bit like Thornton and has a good style for...

Air Conditioning in the Golden Era

Further suggestions for those without AC: Plant shade trees. Close the windows and curtains during the day and open the doors and windows at night and run the fans. Sleep on the fire escape or back porch. (Thomas Sowell says he slept on the fire escape when he was a boy in Harlem in the 30s...

    Childless in the Golden Era

Yes, I remember now--that's where he said the busybodies needed to go to Walden Pond and take a long walk on a short pier because it would be for the greatest good.

    what's wrong with this tie?

Maybe the striped tie, striped suit and striped shirt just make for too many stripes.

Air Conditioning in the Golden Era

As of 2009, my house built in 1910 does not have central AC, just a window unit I rarely use. I'm happier with that than I am with the high-rise office building where I work. The office can be cold as a meat locker year round.

Health Conscious in the Golden Era?

Slightly :offtopic: : After WWII, the chemical age of gardening began. This is when roses got their reputation for being tender and fussy: some of the modern hybrid teas and floribundas couldn't grow without lots of fertilizer and bug spray. The great old garden roses that came west with the...

Health Conscious in the Golden Era?

There's a book called Yoga for Americans written in 1959 that has photos of Gloria Swanson doing yoga. There are good exercises in it (I use the neck exercises every morning--they pop out a lot of kinks), advice to avoid sugar and white flour, and some questionable stuff like colonics and advice...

    Childless in the Golden Era

Said the carefully coiffed, begirdled Jello-eaters. "Unnatural" seems like such an odd epithet from a generation that preferred anything man-made.
