"I was concerned I could't reshape it to a snap-brim."
I reshaped the brim on my Akubra Balmoral, as well as raising its crown, to have an upswept back brim, but I was not able to give it a real snap-brim, meaning that I can't get the front of the birm to snap up or down as I wear it.
"Is the Balmoral a good sun protection hat?"
The Balmoral has a brim width of 2.75".
For sun protection, the wider the brim, the better.
I've heard it said that the recommended brim width for good sun protection from a hat is at least 3" or more, and my personal experience would lead me to...
"is ever-so-slightly loose, but easy to fit with some padding"
Why don't you just shrink the hat down to fit you?
My tried and true method for shrinking non-synthetic hats down, up to an entire size.
1.Turn the sweatband inside of the hat inside-out.
2.Wet the sweatband on the rough side with...
I own many Akubra and several Christys fur felt hats.
The Christys are lighter in weight, and I wear them in warmer weather, (over 60 degrees Fahrenheit).
The Akubra Federation IV and Campdrafts, along with my Stetsons, are the heaviest fur felt hats that I have and I only wear them when the...
Yes, I have reshaped all six of my Akubra hemp hats with just plain water, very much like I have done with all of my open crown Sunbody hats.
I have simply dunked the portion of the hats that I want to reshape into a sink full of tap water with no ill effects whatsoever.
I've raised the crowns...
"I am obsessed with finding a light tan fur felt fedora with dark brown ribbon"
If the colors of the Akubra Federation IV aren't quite what you're looking for, then you may want to have a look at this:
Cappellaria Melegari Keith Richards hat...
"You can pad a hat that's a hair too large; you can moisten and stretch a smaller hat a little bit. And hatters like Art Fawcett can resize a hat up or down one size"
A hat stretcher, some water, and a heat source such as a hair dryer or even just a floor or table lamp will enable anyone to...
There are, at present, only three non-custom-made hats available with "fedora width" brims of less than 3" and open-crown heights of at least 5.75" (and with practically no taper), that I know of.
They are the Akubra Campdraft, the Christys' of London Adventurer/Poet, and the Stetson Stetsonian.
Welcome, sir.
"When I see old films, almost always in black and white, these guys look INCREDIBLE. James Stewart, Cary Grant, etc. When I google "Fedora" as an imagine search, I think most of these modern guys look...ridiculous - most of the time anyway."
Pre-WW2 hats look different because...
All of my, over a dozen, fur felt Akubras, which I purchased in my usual size, originally fit a bit loosely but shrank down to an excellent fit, except for a Federation IV which arrived a little tight and required some stretching to fit properly. The general consensus at this forum is that the...
AustralianGear.com currently offers the Akubra RM in brown, for considerably less than R.M. Williams, at $112.31 US plus $13.01 US shipping, but only in 55cm and 56cm sizes.
Never any worry about losing your cap in the wind because of the massive downforce that this aerodynamically brilliant design generates.
Is the Interstellar Propeller company about to be overwhelmed by a deluge of online orders?
'Twas I, although I object to your use of the word "admitted" with its likely implications.
I'm glad that this classic headgear now finally has its own richly deserved thread here, although it's unfortunate that you should have chosen to start this thread with a photograph of a billed cap which...
Quite true.
I would also suggest that you initially just ignore any hats smaller than size 7, unless they're really extraordinarily rare items in, at least, nearly new condition, as it seems that while such smaller sized hats were commonplace sixty and more years ago, very few men can fit into...
There are a few Akubra hat models, such as the Bushman, that are only sold by U.S.A. retailers.
They can be purchased from David Morgan, Kakadu Trader, and The Cultured Cowboy.
Everything Australian will throw in a free chin strap if you buy an Akubra hat from them with vents, but you have to...
Make it a foursome.
I'm outside a good portion of the time and Akubras have been my "everyday" hats for some years now.
I like their hemp hats during warmer weather, as well.
1.You obviously need to try on some bigger and wider fedoras.
2.I love my Interstellar Propeller cap. I'm amazed that there isn't a thread dedicated to them on this forum. Truly classic headgear.
