Looks like the block is an inch less at the top. It is 6.5 inches high. Good for 30s/40s fedoras...? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Thanks. So that would mean that the actual block would measure slightly more than my actual head size, if I understand correctly. May have stumbled across one in my size with a height of 6.5 inches, but can't tell if tapered or straight. May just take the plunge as price seems fair-ish.

Hat block size question: If buying a hat block, should I be buying my size? I think I read somewhere here - but cannot now find - that the block factors in the size of the sweat. E.g. If my size is 7 1/8, I should buy that block for 7 1/8 and not 7 1/4, correct?

    The Conversion Corral

Ah, excellent, thank you both, I understand. There is a foam company offering blocks here in the UK. I guess they are dense foam but wonder if they can actually function as blocks. Somewhat interesting as their office is 20 mn from home. I also worked out what naptha equivalent is in the UK...

What do you mean by "hand ball"? I tried @TheDane soup ladle which has worked ok on this Stetson 4x. Before: So far: Am having trouble cleaning some stains out of it. Tried lighter fluid (there is no known naptha in the UK) and hat sponge - no joy. Sanded with some 120 grit - progress.

@EstherWeis Bonjour - Belgium is good, no customs duties pending Brexit! J'y vais pour le travail périodiquement, but mainly Bruxelles. Will be in touch separately. Thanks ! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    The Conversion Corral

@T-Jones I think I may have got the inspiration/idea from you in one of your earlier posts :). Other question: I have read of people using a ball (tennis? golf? ping pong :)?) when steaming hats out back to open crown in the absence of a block - tennis ball? OK - maybe I should just get on...

    The Conversion Corral

Thanks - that may be a wiser option with respect to the Borsalino as indeed, I do not have any tools (although I do have paint cans and bubble wrap which I decided to keep rather than throw.... still) and the skill is also of an unknown quality. I would love to be able to send a hat to one of...

    The Conversion Corral

Thanks Moon! I realise that typing questions in the middle of the night (for me) is not the best plan... what my question should have been was: If I have a very battered old hat which is about 1/8 to 1/4 size bigger (exact size is unclear) than mine amd I would like to try and refresh or...

    The Conversion Corral

A (very basic!) question : - if I use a hat which is 1/8 too big, can I make it smaller to fit and how? do I reblock? Or can someone point me to the right thread please?

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

eBay is frustrating for this those outside CONUS. Shipping for east coast US to U.K. (Big cities, not remote at either end) is at least 20$ and then you get hit by 20% import duty, even if marked as gift (UK customs have really gotten on the ball). Having done this twice and realised I could...

    I love the Fed IV!!

Adult themed (as in topics, not pornographic) adventure comic book set between 1913-1925 or so about a Venetian sailor explorer etc. Famous for the drawings by the author, Hugo Pratt and for the great stories and characters. You can see more here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corto_Maltese or...

    I love the Fed IV!!

Yes, it's carbon grey but under a yellow light which seems to change the tone. For sure, I would not have been able to crease it without the how to' s and pictures in the Lounge! Am waiting for an OR Clone and depending on how that works, may order a Moonstone or BG Camp Draft. Argh...

Wasn't sure how well known Corto Maltese is around these parts. We get great service from the local UPS man as he is a fan as well.

    I love the Fed IV!!

Thanks all, reassuring feedback. Front on, I was having trouble / getting used to the lack of taper (which is what I wanted, but still seemed massive at first) - seemed quite wide in the crown, never mind the brim. As I was warned by other Loungers, I am finding 2-2 1/4 inch brims on my other...

My apologies, I did not properly read the last part of your original post, hence my ramblings on a hat you already have and know about!

Good to know, I have been checking out Esther Weiss' website and had come across Daquino as well which looked good. Without meaning to thread-jack, what did you go for?

VAT on anything over £39 if imported and HMRC are vigilant! Ask me how I know... i know you said no Fed IV but... the Fed IV was daunting at first as it is open crown and seems quite wide when looking square on front, but I have been playing around with it and starting to look better and is...

I would be really cautious about bartonprimary. When I first started looking at hats in the UK, I also came across their site. I was and remain suspicious as all their pictures are lifted from other sites and they never responded to some basic questions on sizing. Google search their name and...
