    What do you look like?

on account of it being my 58th birthday my daughter took this sneaky shot - me gazing blankly out of the window "in senior moment" prior to a healthy and invigorating stride over the hills or as Mrs night would have it, prior to blowing up a German troop train....

    Suspenders...

clip-on braces can damage your trousers, and are anyway unreliable - use buttons! Belts and braces together was a common Golden Age look, especially amongst working class men and farmers. That's because belts and braces perform slightly different functions. Braces hold your pants up...

Vintage clothing: when is enough, enough?

One step programme - become a dealer. Then you have to move the stuff on or starve. It won't cure you but it does add a measure of control!

Pre '50 Non American Jazz Recommendations?

A long overdue thread! I've always been very interested in non-American jazz. I seem to have a particular affinity for British and European jazz from the 30s and 40s. I could blather on for hours about why, but I thought some LP/CD recommendations might be more useful! Back in the 1980s...

    Dancing -- styles, etc.

I videoed Groovie Movie off the telly back in the 1980s and actually tried to teach myself to dance from it. Needless to say I didn't succeed!

    Thinking About Soaking My Hat

Me too. Whether to shrink or stretch I prefer to do it on my head. We get a lot of rain here, so often I don't even soak the hat, I wear it outside in a good storm and then let it dry on my head indoors...this is how I usually set the bash as well as adjust the fit.

    Thinking About Soaking My Hat

Good to hear back from you - so it’s a “can-jo”…I like it! I have a neighbour makes fully working instruments (mostly guitars, mandolins and banjos) out of old biscuit tins and other scrap! I’ve played a lot of instruments in my time but for the last 25 years fiddle has been my...

THE PERFECT 1930'S FLAT CAP - if you are a pinhead...

NO LONGER FOR SALE! I gave up on the idea of selling it and decided to try and stretch it. My thinking was that if i could get it up at least two notches I could maybe insert a small panel in the band area to bring it up to 58 (from 55). In fact - and to my great amazement - it stretched up the...

    Flat caps

FAIRY TALE ENDING!!! yowza, I managed to stretch the black single panel pictured above a full THREE notches, from UK 6 3/4 to 7 1/8...which is US 6 7/8 to 7 1/4, or euro 55 to 58! I am over the moon! And it was extremely easy too. The wonders of water and wool combined. Lying in bed the...

    Thinking About Soaking My Hat

hey, you a fiddle player? Me too. And is that a cigar box fiddle in your pic? Home made fiddles like that used to be very common here in England too, a lot of the old players learned on one. back on topic - also remember that soaking a wool hat can be useful for stretching as well as...

    Lost manners

sexual behaviour is obviously a difficult area to research, but what work has been done suggests that what we now call date rape (and a lot of other things including resorting to prostitutes, homosexuality bewteen heterosexuals, domestic violence and child abuse) were actually a lot commoner...

    New monster flat cap

I've found a phone number, but I suspect that even if you manage to get through to a human they'll only sell wholesale Tel: 0207 627 2414 I also found a couple of weblinks but one linked me to Stetson and the other to a hat shop that carries their stuff but has nothing showing under caps...

    New monster flat cap

I'm sure there'll be some around somewhere - sounds as if the mysterious Susquehana Co. are supplying various small specialist retailers throughout the country but not selling direct to the public. Anyway, if I find any in Leeds I'll post. It's a major step when I start buying repro...

    New monster flat cap

'THE SUSQUEHANA HAT CO.' I've heard of them! A friend has a gorgeous tweed cap by them he bought in Leeds last year. It's a cross between the so-called "breton" cap and an 8 panel...which sounds bl**dy horrible but believe me it looks gorgeous. I also failed to find much about them on the...

    ID'ing horsehide, other leathers

Cost was certainly a factor...again, if I remember correctly, goatskin tested best and horse second best, but goat was rejected because of cost. Of course, the Navy, as befits the senior service, went with the best! Having said all that, goatskin was used on some A2 contracts. Indeed...

    ID'ing horsehide, other leathers

Of course, almost everything that anyone says about anything should really be prefixed with some sort of qualification (….maybe, possibly, probably, etc!). So I’d agree that not everyone agrees on this. However, I believe that the US Army did a series of tests between the wars in which...
