The seller on that one noted in an answer to a question that his grandfather, the hat's previous owner, was a senator in the Nevada senate. I did a Google search and came up with a reference to him in a letter discussing the gambling situation in Cuba in 1958 and the Americans involved in it...
Thanks, Lefty. As I recall my counter-offer for the Nokabout was lower than the price I just paid, so he did better in the end on that one by relisting. It's still significantly less than my original max bid, so I'm happy.
Cheers,
Tom
Around here I get the "Why are you in a suit?" question when I'm wearing a sport coat and dress trousers. If they see anything coat-and-tie-like they think its a suit even if the trousers and coat don't match. :eusa_doh:
Cheers,
Tom
The seller seems to be a pretty good guy. I've bought from him before and we've had some discussions about hats. The Nokabout and the Playboy were up for auction previously, along with another Playboy in better condition in a 7 1/4. I bid on all three, won the 7 1/4 Playboy and was runner up on...
I think that depends upon what's on the block. With auctions, there is at least the illusion or remote possibility that you might be able to score that diamond for the cost of cut glass. In reality, that's rare--but auctions do give the buyers the opportunity to offer as high as they are willing...
"Handmade by Legendary Hat Makers Andersen & Berner"
We've seen this hat/cap before, and all I can think of is a couple of hatters down at the pub, telling someone this story...
"Well, Andy here was making a hat for a customer and accidently trimmed the brim down a bit too far, so he tossed it...
Not a bad idea if the hatter is able to pull the hat down onto the block using just a puller-downer (technical term) and not use the brim at all to pull down the hat. It was pulling the hat down onto block that caused my misadventure.
Feraud, you may be referring to this thread about what happened to my brother-in-law's Brent. The problem with stitching felt together is that it tends to come apart if you put the needle through too close to the edge of the break.
On the hat in question, was the break along the stitching for...
I snagged that one; didn't expect to, though. The only real issue with it that I could see is that the wind trolley is broken. (I can't imagine someone cut it to that length.) I figured I could do without one. ;)
Cheers,
Tom
:D
Here's another one looking for that fool. It's a still-live BIN for a "Vintage Stetson Hat" for $399. I don't normally post live eBay auctions or BINs but I doubt there will be a rush for this one at that price and a 6 7/8 size even if it is NutriaQuality.
I'm posting it simply for the...
I think that may be a general problem across the board. My sister-in-law was commenting yesterday about the fact that in our area (rural southern Ohio) children start school without knowing how to dress themselves, to properly use and flush the toilet, to get along with others, to hold a pencil...
Under the heading of "There's no accounting for what happens on eBay" we have this Stetson 4X of undertermined size and no liner going for $242. Excuse me, I mean this "Spanish American War Style - Campaign Hat Stetson."
[huh]
Cheers,
Tom
Mine. :D Happened to stumble across it when it had about 6 minutes left in the auction. Took a quick look, then did something I rarely do--bid without using a sniper. Since I use Hughes.net that's taking a large chance that my bid won't go through in a timely manner, but it worked out this time...
Nice Dobbs, Eric! I've not heard of the Kenley but I like it.
Man, that is one sweet lid, Al! If I'd come across that one when it was up for auction you've have had serious competition! I gotta tell you, though, it suits you like it was made for you. Congratulations on your find...
It's been a while since I posted a hat of the day since I've found I'm usually wearing the same few hats to work these days. Today, though, in honor of St Patrick's Day I wore my green Dobbs Gay Prince. Please excuse the poor picture quality; it's taken with an iPhone in a network closet at one...
LOraine 7-2998. We always said El-Oh-7-2998, though.
I think my Dad had that number for over 30 years. It was a big thing in the late '60s when we moved and were able to take the number with us!:eeek:
Cheers,
Tom
I've been to the Black Country Museum and have done the Dudley Tunnel tour. Must have been 10 years ago or so. Had a great time.
One of the things I loved about being stationed in England was that there was so much to do and see, all over the UK, and if you're looking at it from a Yank's point...
I remember going to the Goodyear store on Tweedy Boulevard in South Gate, CA before Christmas every year to buy their annual Christmas album. It was a collection of Christmas songs by various performers and cost a buck, as I recall. Even back then I thought it was a little odd to be going to a...
