I always steam or iron from the outside of the hat. Never directly on the leather. I don't use one of these heated stretchers, I didn't like the results I was getting and got rid of it. If I,m cleaning the underside of the brim I'll protect the sweatband with painters tape and put something over...
I'm reluctant to go into it, honestly.
In other threads where I've started to discuss some of my techniques and tricks for refurbing vintage hats I've been inundated by people chiming in with how I'm doing this or that all wrong. Some of it quite acrimonious. Of course these comments were from...
The problem with stretching hats with one of these devices is that if you leave the sweatband in it will leave a pronounced ridge in the felt. Not a big deal on wide ribbons but on thin ribbons it looks awful. Since I don't usually take out the sweatbands (many are delicate on vintage hats) I...
Hato, it's "Bismuto" kind of a sort of grey. It's one of those hard to define colors and even harder to capture in a picture.
Bob, it looks my tag says "Ta Ludola" (I think?). What Alan said, or some variation. This hat is from the corregated sweatband "Thingy" period
More fantastic hats again today!
S4C-That 707 is sharp! Love the tie as well
Fruno-Can't go wrong with the Camp Draft and expertly shaped!
DJH-Man you've got some great summer straws! Good thing You moved to Texas, extend the summer hat season
Charlie-That VS is sweet! I like you in a big...
Robert, the modern Stetson's are much improved but the felt quality is just not there yet (I've bought 3 of them so far to support the cause). I don't love the finish on the Akubra's or how thick the felt is but they are more durable and considerably cheaper. Nothing's perfect, I guess.
Everybody is looking very well hatted this weekend!
Yesterday
Royal Stetson mid to late 50's, I think
Today
Royal Stetson Stratoliner same time period as above
To me a good looking hat looks good on any size or shape. If I thought anything it would be that low tapered crowns with stingy brims look good on no one. My focus is on the hat not how I look in it. I assume I don't look good and the hat isn't going to make or break that.
But, hey, if these...
Good to hear and thanks for the responses. Sounds reasonable and worth it to me especially as I would do the sweatband and liner treatment only on hats that I want to wear regularly and keep not to preserve an ultra rare example of a mark. Now where do I start..........
CONELRAD, those are some great catches as well. I hope to see them go into production. I can never find vintage fuzzy long hair hats in my size.
Moe, nice cap as well! Shows it pays to try these on just in case! Also good to have windy day back ups.
Leaf logos but older size tags so I'm guessing early to mid fifty's on this one. Not as fancy as that embroidered logo on your vita-felt!
I favor the long ovals when I can get them but many have lost their "long". This one has kept it's long oval-ness.
