I'd always read Whitman was the inspiration, although I can't remember for the life of me where I've read it or if it's even reliable.
But judging from other famous writers' hats, perhaps The poet was just the perfect name for such a hat.

It's interesting seeing the evolution of some of the well known hats over time, like the Flagship and Stetsonian, as well as hats that have been completely unknown to me.
Here's another from my friend's antique shop. Beautiful Hopkins Whippet style fedora. In very good shape, size 7 3/8 however it fit my head pretty well and I'm 7 1/4. It'd probably be mine if I wasnt broke haha... (sigh.)

I've used weather stripping. The waviness depends on the sweatband, at least in my experience. Some have really uncomfortable puckers and others conform to the head a little nicer. But yeah. I've used weather stripping, and it works quite well.
