Ask a question, get an answer

Using a block that has the same circumference as your head measurement will make you a hat that you cannot wear, it will be a size too small.

The Non Shorpy Web All Stars.

I mentioned this in Fedoras Afield, but this is probably more appropriate. My paternal grandfather in Yosemite, apparently 1930.

Anyone heard from Bob from Black Sheep Hats?

Y'all had me worried for a second as I've had it at the top of my mind to reach out. Lo and behold he emailed me earlier this afternoon, so he is alive and well.

    Felt all seasons

Well, I wear felt year round, but the bay area does not have "seasons" per se. I don't think there's a significant difference between rabbit or beaver, but to the extent that there might be, rabbit is less dense so there would be more airflow theoretically. A good straw hat is never a bad...

Help with dating these two vintage fedora's anyone?

Well represented as in Stetson made a lot of nutria quality hats. Um, if you're just looking for someone to throw out a dollar figure that you might be able to fetch on eBay....well, I decline.

Help with dating these two vintage fedora's anyone?

whatever that original remark may or may not have been, if you'd like to take a look at the historical catalogs, you'll see that the nutria quality felt was fairly well represented: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/miller-stockman-catalogs.52929/

Help with dating these two vintage fedora's anyone?

Hard to say what really is "rare" or not. Anecdotally, I feel like I see more nutria hats than say, 7xCB or 100s.

    Current cleaning/blocking recommendations

Paul's will probably not take your refurb. A while back they posted something to the effect of "we prefer to spend time on custom hats." You can try giving them a ring, but AFAIK, they're appointment only. We used to have Hat Guys in Oakland, but they closed down. Baron Hats also offers...

    Guide for first fedora/hat

Well, that's a broad first post.... Modern Stetsons are really Stetson in name only. The John B. Stetson company no longer makes hats, they license their IP to Hatco, which also produces Resistol and Dobbs (among other brands). So if we are being academically precise, the modern Open Road is...

Help with dating these two vintage fedora's anyone?

The interior tags under the sweat on the Stetson would help, but 40's-50's is a pretty safe ballpark. There are a handful of those Nutria Quality lids around the lounge.

    Fedoras afield

My paternal grandfather worked at the Yosemite post office for a while (I believe this would have been 1930's), in some photo album somewhere we have a picture of him standing in front of it with a tame bear.

A Good Time for a Custom Hat?

It's a good time to support independent makers and businesses if one is in the financial situation to do so. For those of us who are self-employed, we are caught between a rock and a hard place. Everybody is scrambling to create new business models out of thin air in the midst of implementing...

Stetson silverbelly vs fawn picture request

Hats of the same color look different on different sites because hats look different under different lighting conditions in real life too. That sounds a bit obvious as I type it out, but it's the same as if you tried it on in a store and then walked outside. Want another example to drive you...
