old candy bars were called lunch bars?

And those people from the city that "lunch" and "flush the toilet all day." (My parents nice way of saying "city slicker.") So, I have a confession: I have never had Nutella. I grew up on a farm and mainly ate whole foods (that came out of said farm) growing up. I never ate ramen until...

The discussion about the general lack of vitamin D3

I've heard 10 minutes of midday sunlight on your forearms provides enough vitamin D for the average person. That's 10 minutes per day. The more skin you expose, the less time. The later or earlier in the day, the more time. Also location matters too.

The discussion about the general lack of vitamin D3

You can't absorb vitamin D through glass, so even having an office window won't help. I had my Vitamin D levels plummet a few years ago, right before I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. There's a correlation, but they aren't sure what causes what. I take a daily supplement along with Calcium as...

    Does your name date you?

I know 3 children named Grace. Two have very religious parents and the third was a bit of a miracle child. One of the families has children named Grace, Faith, and Hope.

As if we didn't chat about pin curls enough. . .

What is your setting pattern? My understanding is that for a smoother look your pin curls should go one direction per "row." So, top/ first row goes forward facing curl, forward facing, forward, etc. I set my hair with every other curl going the opposite direction and get more of a "wild"...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

This is not so trivial; but I am really sick of bystanders. If you think something is oh so horrible, then do something about it.

    Vintage Appliances

I've heard this is especially true with modern high end "commercial" ranges. Apparently they have a lot of parts and are a pain to clean.

    Tramps and other characters

My paternal grandparents owned a farm near lake Ontario, in "fruit country" (mostly cherries) in the 1930s through 1959. They used migrant labor, who were largely African Americans who worked from sun up to sun down. My grandfather found out that the 25 cents he paid per worker, only 10 cents...

    Tramps and other characters

My grandfather was homeless at 12. My great-grandfather was an alcoholic and threatened to kill my grandfather if he ever came back. My grandfather eventually found a mechanic who took my him in. My grandfather got a meal everyday but Sunday, learned a trade, and was allowed to sleep on the shop...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Those I frequent for stuff for the kids. But the rule is I must think of 5 reasons why that $1 or $3 is better spent on that than something else (like the swingset I'm saving up to buy them). Normally I double back. Good buys have been a crayon tin for the car and Olaf character socks. Bad...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Well, at least this thread is making me feel better about the shed of stuff I can't part with. My parents were hoarders. I learned some really bad habits. :( I just threw out the vase my mentor and good friend (who passed away almost 3 years ago) gave me for our wedding. It fell over and the...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I grew up in a place similar to that (and rural for the northeast, but not rural for say North Dakota). Walmart, the only full service grocery store, was a good hour away, twould hours to abother full store. You could buy basics at the convenience store (milk, bread, eggs) but if you wanted...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I don't understand why people go to these retail stores so much. I go to something like a Walmart or Target once every 2 to 3 months. What are these people *buying*??? (Other than grocery shopping.)

    Garden plans this year?

I am upset. We had a late snow, and at the time our orchard was just starting to bud out. I was pretty hopeful that most of our trees had survived our dry hot summer last year, but it looks like this late hard frost got a lot of the ones that were planted last spring. It's been two weeks and the...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I had a girl friend tease me a couple of weeks ago: Me: Forget the wine, give me a bottle of gin. Her (teasing tone): Really? When's the last time you had gin? I bet you haven't had gin in months. Me: Tuesday. I had a martini on Tuesday. Her: Ummm... We've been out of gin a month now, I think...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I especially find it irksome that there's this popular "mommy-culture" belief that if you have childcare for a bit, your ideal escape is a Starbucks Latte while you push your cart around Target shopping. My ideal escape involves several dirty martinis.

    Things I'll miss when retired

My current plan (if my husband and I are so lucky to retire) is to buy a little RV and travel the US and Canada during the summers/ winters. Not one of those bus-size RVs, but a medium-sized one. We'll attach a Model A on a trailer on the back and travel around to all the national parks and...

    Lost art of proper relaxation

I am one of those people who doesn't answer her phone everything it rings. I tell my students you can call me 9am to 9pm. I have my phone blocked after 9pm to all but my husband's number. If it's a true emergency, a person will keep calling. Or leave a message. I started getting really...

    Garden plans this year?

We had good luck with getting apples off our dwarfs really soon. (We plucked most of them off the first few years to allow them to put towards the roots.) We planted semi-dwarfs at the new house in 2013. No apples yet, but they are really growing. I am hopeful that perhaps this year we will...

    Vintage Appliances

For those of us for which electric is the only option, there are restorers who do conversions on vintage stoves. (I'm well aware that propane is an option if you do not have a natural gas source, but if one feels unsafe having a propane tank lying around, there are still options.) Also, if...
