As far as I understand it, the dip in the back is commonly seen on bush hats, Westerns and the like because it supposedly keeps the sun off the back of the neck better than an upturned rear brim on a fedora. At least in origin - by this point, I suspect it's primarily a style thing. I've used...
I think most folks are handwriting less and less generally now, just the way things are moving on. When I was an undergrad I had sheafs and sheafs of handwritten notes. I finally threw virtually all of them - long outdated as they were - in the bin about five years ago when my parents were...
There are threads somewhere where this came up. They were indeed having the jackets made out East, then selling them through their EU based business. Which was not really a surprise, given that the price they were retailing them at was significantly lower than what you would expect to be...
I hope so. :) I have a mind for two green fedoras - one of these, and one in a more 'bottle green' colour. The bluegrass would go well with the more earthtone feel of tweeds.
Very nice indeed. I particularly like the two-tone detail over the foot. That lighter colour on the vamp at first glance in the last shot really looks like a spat - moreso than the echoes of same in a pair of co-respondent shoes, the latter losing that same illusion with the visible lacing.
Gary Eastman did a lot of research some years ago for his A2 book (if you hunt TFL, you'll find where we discussed it at the time) which led him to conclude that actually steer was widely used in wartime production. I've not kept up with the A2 collector side of things in recent years, but...
I didn't have a mobile phone until early 1999 - my parents bought me one and presented me with it as a gift the night before I moved to London for work. It was an Ericcson half-brick - a big step on from where they'd been a year or two previously. It still had an external aerial, but a short, 1"...
The untucking is definitely part of it.... I've no time for this stuff about "mid-rise", though - if it's lower than the natural waist, it's too low. They call it a waistband for a reason... ;)
I've come to find his stuff so saccharine in recent years that I've largely stopped bothering with a project to which he is attached as director - fairly or no. He *has* done some fantastic stuff in the past. I found Ready Player One disappointing. I'd like to see his take on West Side Story...
Indeed. I suspect said Youtuber is looking at this from a modern perspective, against trousers that stop some way below the natural waist, and wanting to move the jacket down to match them, rather than the waistband up to match the jacket.
It's a fair point. I know when I buy... well, pretty much anything, wardrobe wise, I will look at the price tag in a 'per wears' sort of thing. This started I think back in my very early twenties, when I first realised I could buy serviceable black tie for the cost of a couple of hires of the...
Working from home this week, I've received notification a new beret has arrived for me in the office - I'll pick that up next week. I say beret, well....
It's a caubeen. An Irish beret of sorts, with its folk-historic origins in a cap worn by General Owen Roe O'Neill (1585-1649). In design...
I'd be wary of adding too much in the way of length myself. The patterns Aero use are cut to the style of a particular period, and messing about with the proportions to suit modern ways of dressing (untucked shirts, waistbands significantly south of the natural waist and the likes) is apt to...
Here's one I just realised this week that I do.
The hall lightswitch in my flat is at the front door, our bedroom is at the opposite end on an L-shaped corridor. Rather than double back on myself, I typically use my phone to light my way to the bedroom after putting out the hall light. Funny...
Always fun! I had a set of hefty sideburns back about twenty years ago. I grew mine in as I was a hardcore Rocky Horror shadowcaster at the time, and they looked way better than a fake pair with my FranknFurter wig. Tragedy struck in 2006: I had to accept the bald, shaved my head, and...
I like the first few in this thread, which were clearly designed to be that length. The Vanson Model E wouldn't work on me, though I can see it appealing to someone with a longer torso. It puts me in mind of a lot of crosszips I've seen on the fashion and motorcycle markets both, with the...
Ah, I see what the question is now.... Looked to me like there's a topstitch on the shoulder, but the stitching is internal elsewhere? Like the topstitching is a detail over the top half where it's seen in wear, but internal stiches hold the arm on right the way round?
