You can also try Western outfitters like Schaefer, they have both popovers and button-ups with fairly traditional cuts, though if you want that big full cut look with wide sleeves and torsos the above suggestions will suit you better, or go vintage, there is some amazing stuff out there without...
Great reminiscences thanks !
I've never worn Wranglers, they were around but weren't popular in Eastern Canada. I did recently buy a fabulous vintage classic Wrangler denim Western shirt off of Etsy, it's lovely dark denim, the design and trim are really attractive, and his has a long tail...
I'm really interested in the size 7 Snowy River, but the eBay shipping to Switzerland is killer. Would you consider a direct sale when the action ends, if unsold ?
You might find the Westerner pants from Japanese sites, there seem to be a lot left i many sizes, but you'd have to have a good look at the measurements to make sure they'll fit.
I wouldn't buy a repro denim jacket either, you're right about the vintage Westerners not looking great by now or...
I have a few Filson Chino Twill shirts I found cheap on eBay, they definitely look the part, are well made, and soften up and wear in really well, just be aware that the sizing is quite skewed, I normally measure between a medium and large but the Filson small in shirting is perfect for me.
I'm with you all the way regarding the 101J, and have almost the same rotation, save for my two Westerners, both being Japanese repros, one in the classic cream colour and the other in a greenish hue that has faded to tan since <i picked it up in used but excellent condition. The cream/white one...
I'm not referring to yours in that comment !
Excuse my lack of proper terminology, I was referring ends of a horsehair band that are often left loose and unbraided.
That would actually make a perfect band for the Sombrero, as well, and not entirely out of Akubra's wheelhouse. I was actually thinking of going that route, but I really like the look of a horsehair band on top of a ribbon, ended up going with the ribbon with the idea of possibly adding a nice...
Thanks for your comments, I found them fascinating, this is the kind of thing that really interests me about past fashions, styles, and trends, and how they vary from region to region and person to person.
I haven't noticed a difference much in durability but by the time I wore Levi's I was...
For a variety of reasons (marketing, lesser past and current popularity compared to Levis, limited production and distribution of repro versions, etc), Lee jeans and jackets get a lot less attention here and in general than Levis do.
Growing up in Montreal in the 60s and 70s, Levis were at...
Fair call, but I think you have a bigger frame and a bigger head than mine, now I've reduced the curl the effective brim width is wider than it was before, any wider on my noggin and I'd look like a hatstand in it !
Nothing wrong with it at all, just not my style. The thing is, the cowhide one is such a particular and uncommon style of band that I think its limited appeal seriously reduces the overall appeal of the hat. Itt might make a fine aftermarket accessory but is misjudged as a stock item, IMO...
Thanks! I considered it but what with getting a good clean cut and ironing out the brim and then ironing in a pencil curl, I decided to get a semi-local hattery to do the work, which I'm very happy with. The hat wears better now even though I barely took much off the brim, it balances better...
I had forgotten about this thread, might as well update it, as promised, after posting some photos of the finished product in the other Sombrero pictures thread. The brim was cut down slightly and reworked with a smaller pencil curl, I'm really digging the result.
Thanks !
I had to look him up, well spotted! I was going for that 1920s Western look, I even sent the hatter a few pictures of Stetsons and Alexanders from the era.
Just back from a long walk with the dog, I'm very happy with the sun protection I'm still getting since the slight brim trim and reworking. I'm much more comfortable with this look, it no longer feels like I've got a canoe perched on my noggin.
I might steam and roll the pencil curl a bit...
Job done, waiting for the return of the hat in the mail ! The shop sent me a couple of pictures, it looks great if a bit out of proportion with this brim shape, but I think it'll look great in person. I might steam a tiny bit more side curl to the brim if I have trouble walking through...
I found a shop in Zurich that is cutting down the brim, I was surprised when they told me that the brim is the same width all around, in spite of contrary information on the Akubra site and appearances.
He's only taking a centimetre off all around, and reshaping a uniform pencil curl, perhaps I...
