Oh no! It is such a beautiful jacket and those tears in the leather. Skin on Skinz in SF did a good job on a repair to a pair of my Langlitz pants. They had a hole in the leg when I bought them. Maybe something nibbled on them while they were in storage?
It does seem like something...
Also, open to ideas from anybody for do-it-yourself improvements. I would like to get a nicer quality leather onto the wrist gauntlets and some type of finish to the edge.
Well...it is a good news/bad news scenario. I’ll start with the good news. The gauntlets seem to be stabilized, and they will not crack further because of the new leather reinforcement. Also, I think they are wearable again, which is nice. The glove part is still in really good shape.
The bad...
For the record, I found a local cobbler who could do a few repairs on these:
(1) glue the cracked leather back down to the stiffener layer.
(2) put a new layer of leather onto the gauntlet portion at the wrist.
(3) stitch the new leather around the edge of the gauntlet portion at the wrist.
I...
I think this is a valuable thread. Thanks for starting it. I have found a couple of considerations unique to gloves that are worth keeping in mind:
(1) Gloves tend to harbor a lot of dirt relative to my jackets of a similar age. Dirt also seems to get worked into the leather, especially in the...
Thanks Edward for the reply and the ideas. It sounds like you inherited a great motorcycle kit from your grandfather. Those goggles would be fun to see.
I also think you are right about the thinner leather layer used over the stiff-wristed gauntlets. I think it is only a thin layer of leather...
I’m wondering if anyone has any input on these. I found a great old pair of motoring gauntlets that could also be used for motorcycling.
The glove part is still in good shape. The gauntlet at the wrist has a couple of deep cracks. I’m considering ways to repair the cracks. I was thinking...
Sorry for the delay. I replied to you via email. Here is another image of the pants. I get more upload options posting to a forum than sending a message.
I have a couple of pairs of Just Leather (in San Jose, California) vintage pants. My guess is 70s because they have the older yellow label. I’m not sure I am ready to part with either pair (one black, one brown), but the brown ones have been spending a lot of time on the shelf and not getting...
Pit to pit is listed as 19”, but it doesn’t match up with the sleeve or shoulder measurements. Maybe this is just how measurements come out if you cut a size 38 for a riding posture?
The saga continues! I got the lining on my Star Glove replaced at Cal Leathers. They did wonderful work to insert the new lining with minimal effect on the outside of the jacket.
They also helped with the zipper pull that was missing.
The work is really fantastic. I second the...
I used a curved upholstery needle so I could go through all the layers of leather using the original stitching holes. I wanted to try to re-sew the seam sections without creating any new holes in the leather. It worked, but only because I had a lot of time to work really slowly and good...
It is a really nice lining on that jacket. Cool pattern in the fabric! Looks like it might also reinforce the fabric. There are a few spots n my lining where the wear of taking the jacket on and off has worn out the fabric.
Thanks for the info about the main zip replacement. Do you think it was done in the 60s or later than that? I had a tough time dating that Talon main zipper. Also, do you think the pocket zippers are also replacements? It has been hard to find a replacement pull, and I am not entirely happy with...
The tag also looks like it is in its original spot (and not re-sewn into a replacement lining). If it is original, I think I would patch rather than replace.
I have not had any luck contacting Cal Leathers by email. I need to try calling. There is an appeal to sending the jacket to the original...
Did they have to sew into the exterior leather at all to replace the lining? It may end up being the deciding factor for me about whether to patch or re-line. I am talking to the people at Johnson online, but we haven’t made it to that level of detail yet.
I’m hoping for some advice regarding repairing the lining of this jacket. Is there any value to keeping the “original” lining to these jackets? I put original in quotes because I am not sure that the current lining IS the original. I am weighing a choice between a spot repair of the lining in...
I borrowed a pic from when I first got the jacket and posted about it. The light now is too dim for a photo to do the jacket justice. I have since repaired most of the liner tear you can see near the collar.
I also found this pic that shows how I mimicked the machine stitching.
It was a...
