Thanks Peter and Canuck! The sizing was custom for me. I tried on both the stock 42 and 44 in the shop and neither worked for me. I think I have broad shoulders for my waist and chest size, which can throw off standard sizes. I am not sure how (or if) they compensate for no action back with...
My new Langlitz 10 pocket padded Columbia came just after the holidays. The anniversary tag was included for jackets made this year. After a owning a lot of vintage jackets, I am enjoying the fit of a custom made for me jacket. Ironically, it does also make me appreciate the few vintage jackets...
If you have the stub of a beeswax candle around, that has worked well for me. I keep an old candle end in a drawer for when zippers get sticky. I spread it on the teeth and then work the zipper up and down a few times to distribute the wax. I try to avoid over using it, since the wax can be a...
I found this beauty at a thrift store in Pescadero near SF. It was pretty grungy when I found it. I think it had been stored in a damp garage, which took a lot out of the leather. I took it in to Just Leather pre-pandemic when they were still open. They gave me some of the conditioner they used...
Looks good! In case it is useful, I took a measurement through the belt loops on my jacket at the current lacing tightness and the measurement is 44”. No belt included with my jacket, though :)
Ok, Ok! You talked me out of selling it :) In the end, seller’s remorse can be tough. I am going to hang on to this one and resolve to wear it more this year.
I bought this jacket from a local secondhand shop. I’m not wearing it enough, so I thought I would see if I could pass it on. The lining is printed with the Schott logo. There are belt loops, but no belt. The zips and snaps all work. It is tag size 44. $300 PPFF plus shipping in lower 48 states...
I bought this jacket from the FL classifieds a couple of years ago. I am just not wearing it enough, so I thought I would try to pass it on. The tag size is 40, but I think it is a bit larger than that, see measurements below. YKK main and sleeve zips all work. The hand warmer pockets are...
Hi Everyone,
Posting here in hopes of getting some expert input from those who have posted already. I have reached the point in this hobby that I decided to take the plunge and order a custom Columbia. I tried on some of the standard sizes in the shop, and none had the right combo of shoulder...
I found a pretty good article (semi-technical) on tanning from the EPA.
https://www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/2020-10/documents/c9s15.pdf
It has a pretty good description of the process. I understand better what people mean when they say fat-liquoring. It also seems like effective conditioning...
Obenauf’s oil is the only thing I have had success with (other than lots of time hanging in the sun and fresh air) to reduce a musty or old smell in a vintage jacket. It has a pleasant scent that seems to stick around in the leather. Don’t expect miracles, though. In my experience, it did not...
Thanks for the additional information. The boots do look just like the 2268 Engineer style. They still had the tags attached (and in English), so I don’t think it was a non-US style designation. In any case, they are a nice pair of boots. I’m getting on with the break-in. Ironically, the...
Hi Everyone,
I picked up a pair of Red Wing Engineer boots with the style number 25416 at our local charity shop yesterday. I can date them to sometime between 1983 and 1991 based on the ANSI tag for their reinforced toe. Other than that, internet searches are turning up zilch. Anyone know any...
San Diego Leather did a good job on my thrift store find G-1. There were some extra stitch lines and other aspects, so I might not send a collectible jacket to them. They did a good job for an everyday wear jacket, though.
This is a newspaper ad (November 1983) indicating that at least the 1983-1984 era custom work from Taste of Leather came from Taubers.
The Taubers “Chips” ad shows up repeatedly in the same paper in Oct-Nov 1984.
