I am on a road trip and just spotted a Cal “in the wild”. I am hoping for some advice about whether this is worth picking up for about $180. The pluses are the weight of the leather (feels more like my Star Glove than my other Cal), the tea core-ish wear (at least more so than my other Cal), and...
These snaps from a pair of driving/motorcycling gauntlets have me puzzled. USF I get, but not sure about C F Co? Carr fastener mid-merger? My guess is that the gloves date from the 19-teens or 1920s.
Resurrecting this 2019 thread in hopes of identifying a mystery pair I found in the Pac NW. No identifying marks except a 9 1/2 size sticker. The snap says C F Co. USF (I thought it said USA until I took the closeup pic). I think I remember USF from the dating using snaps forum here. I can’t ID...
I had a pair of riding/driving gloves that cracked like this after I conditioned them. I thought possibly in my case it was because I got the leather wet with water when it was too depleted of oils and waxes. It seems like the leather can tear more easily when it cracks like this. My gloves tore...
Agreed. Damp cloth works miracles getting off dust/dirt that dulls the leather. I have sometimes had problems with haze developing after using cleansers. I think the heavy surface treatment of goatskins during tanning may mean a lot of stuff you use on it just sits on top of the hide.
Anybody...
I’m in the US, so shipping would be too expensive to the EU. These are both Wescos. The Boss boots are US 9. The other pair was custom for somebody, so no size info. I estimate them around a US 10.5. Both are a little too big for me, but I am keeping them until I find ones with a better fit :)
Yes, pretty dry. Especially inside the palm. It is also where the fading is worst.
The logo on the button is older. I think it was used as far back as the 1920s.
Another online purchase. Does this qualify as a collection? I was drawn to the older logo on the fasteners. I would like advice, too. Should I use a clear conditioner like Pecards? Does the fading lend character?
I also have some great tinted Saphir cream to restore the color. It would be good...
I bought this vintage pair in an online auction. Hansen is another brand with a long history of US manufactured gloves. I think they make mostly women’s gloves now, but they made men’s in the past. This pair is horsehide, which I really like. I am not sure about the date, but I am researching...
The mouton collar is in overall good shape. There are a couple of bare spots, but otherwise ok.
I think I will leave as is, unless anything needs done to stabilize the areas of loss.
Is this the original zipper?
Thanks for sharing any knowledge you have.
I’m hoping to get people’s thoughts & suggestions on this G-1 I just bought. I would like to restore it, but I am trying to figure out how much is original, and how much has already been restored/replaced. The jacket is a 7823B spec.
The waist knits are in ok shape. I was thinking about darning...
That is a nice G-1! I think I paid about the same for my LL Bean jacket.
Getting to know all the fit quirks of various jackets and makers is one of the joys, but also the sorrows of this hobby :) Sadly, it often ends in buying custom jackets ;) I am wearing one of mine today. They seem...
I also find these jackets vary in their type of fit. Old school WWII flight jackets that these are modeled after were a pretty trim fit. More modern renditions are roomier. I like having a variety of fits in my collection so I can go from slim fit with just a t shirt up to layering over a sweater.
I have one with the green script LL Bean label, “made in the USA“, and tagged 44. It also has the one piece back. The pit to pit is 23 1/2”. They seem to put a big fit easement Into their jackets. The leather on it is really nice. It is the main reason that I hold onto the jacket, despite it...
