Is it me or has it become harder to sell things on Classifieds or anywhere else?

Plausibly, yes. It's always the same old trick: how do you keep the identity of the place, without becoming irrelevant, and at what point does maintaining relevance mean loss of identity... I'm all on board for 1919-1960 - for the sake of argument - though for me personally stretching it into...

Borsalino / Made In China ? Still Worth Big $$$$ ?

Facebook ads are absolutely rife with fake products using stolen photos and such, though they usually give themselves away with as a rule the price being too low to be legit. I did once get caught out with a Grail Diary repop, but Paypal refunded my entire bill and didn't require me to return...

I've been obsessed with a pair of shoes for 30 years...

Never tried a pair, but that company are pretty responsive to queries in my experience.

    Post New Hats Here!

Saw this Dunn on eBay, and decided to take a punt on it. 1950s according to the seller. It'll see some wear into the Spring, I expect - it's a little light for depths of Winter, but come late March / into April.... Seller's photo: My photos: Fun little hat I'll enjoy wearing with a pair...

You know you are getting old when:

I wouldn't be surprised if VHS did have a retro comeback. I'm not a fan of cassette tapes, but they're in production again now, with a lot of the kids who weren't alive when they were last a big deal getting into them again. VHS is starting to attract some of the same retro appeal for the...

Footwear to go with our jackets

Somewhere - I think they're in the storage unit currently, I must see if I can dig out a photo. They're on borrowed time now (I had them made in 2009) but only because a carpet beetle ate quite the gouge out of one of them near where the upper joins the sole. Eventually I fear it may rip. I...

Footwear to go with our jackets

I see some lovely stuff coming from these Far Eastern producers. One of my favourite pairs of shoes ever was hand-made in a small place in Beijing - I was measured up in person, then a colleague on the same project collected and brought them back for me a couple of weeks later. My travel in SE...

General myths and "urban legends" on product quality

All part of the business ecosystem. Interestingly, we seem to be in Central London seeing the beginnings of what people predicted ecommerce and fast broadband with WFH would do years ago, but the game changer as much as anything was covid and lockdown running long enough to change habits.

General myths and "urban legends" on product quality

Agreed. I have issues with Bezo's operation, but you can't argue with either their affordability, the speed or the availability. I can generally get things faster on Prime now than I can find the time to go into town to seek them out - and the majority of what I'm after these days just isn't...

How many custom hat shops are left?

In-person is always the best option for so many things. On the flipside, I'm very glad of the ecommerce options these days as they definitely make it possible for so many artisanal businesses like hatters to operate with ready access to a much wider market whereas sticking locally most of them...

You know you are getting old when:

Very nice. That's the sort of bike I'd be looking into if ever we manage to move somewhere I have the indoor storage space for a bike. (In my flat currently, I'd have to leave it chained outside, and the rust would probably kill it before the wheel got pinched.) I love that Raleigh and others...

Hi new here. Is wearing a leather jacket basically an invitation for trouble?

Could have been worse if you'd been obviously sporting the associate lingerie... I get the cowboy thing with a fedora here in London. Most of the time tbh people are trying to be complimentary and just have a limited frame of pop-culture reference points... Though there was the guy who...

Footwear to go with our jackets

Very nice! What brand are they? I've really taken to subtle Western boots like this, with minimal decoration and a less exaggerated heel shape. Nice pairing, Captain Hilts!

    Pocket heaters

Years since I saw one of these devices in use. Sort of thing that I suppose isn't so common now with most of us spending more time indoors and central heating being a norm. (I remember my parents installing central heating in our then house in 1980; by the time radiators were being installed in...

What Cap Are You Wearing Today?

Both great! I have a bit of a bias towards Donegal Tweed being an Irishman and from the North, but still! That green is a real star. I do like an earthtone cap, but there's something just magnificent about an emerald shade like yours. I'm going to be having a new cap or two made in the New Year...

Hi new here. Is wearing a leather jacket basically an invitation for trouble?

Heh. Weirdly, that's one I've never been asked... but then the traditional, collar cross-zip was never something you saw being worn on a motorcycle round my way until relatively recently (and then only by the occasional very much retro minded soul). In my experience they were much more...

What Cap Are You Wearing Today?

Didn't manage to get a photo, but took the dog for a long walk through East London this afternoon, giving my ELC B2 cap the first wear of the season. Turned out perfect for the weather - a cold, bright day, with the fleece keeping my head warm and the peak keeping the sun out of my eyes.

I've been obsessed with a pair of shoes for 30 years...

The Hush Puppies Elvis Oxford from their Elvis range that came out in the wake of the film last year are smooth leather - Not identical to those in the OP, but in a similar vein. I don't (yet - I actually just bought a pair in a half price sale on the HP UK website when searching for this...

What Cap Are You Wearing Today?

SJC (Cathcart Heritage now) eight-dart cap from the 16/17 Winter collection. Corduroy with brushed cotton lining; the warmest cap I've ever owned other than a B2 or a ushanka (assuming the latter is a cap rather than a 'hat' - jury's out on that one!). Paris today for my last teaching trip this...

Hornskov Hats - custom Danish hatter

This lone looks great - pretty sure I've seen an image of Steve Buscemi wearing a very similar hat in Boardwalk Empire?
