The Brill Bros. G-1 that I have in my collection is early 1980’s-vintage; it’s very thick and heavy (probably cowhide) with wider-cut sleeves. The materials and overall construction seem very robust.
I haven’t researched the Brill Bros. company but as others have stated, they did have several...
1980’s vintage Willis & Geiger G-1 (with sweater & thermal shirt underneath on a frigid cold day). The aged, dark russet goatskin & faded mouton fur collar exactly match a WWII W&G M-422a that I have in my collection.
I just picked up a Schott N-1 deck jacket with duck down insulated lining. It’s super-warm, very comfortable and has a great mix of classic and updated styling. Nor are they overly expensive. They’re available in green or blue. Highly recommended!
Another day, another G-1. Got this one off eBay for 80 bucks, made by the San Diego Leather Factory (1980’s manufacture). Great fit, amazing workmanship and truly superb goatskin! Not 100% milspec accurate but close enough, with great additional features (hidden side-entry pockets that are...
You can check out U.S. Authentic (FlightJackets.com)
They make both an AN-J-4 and the somewhat similar M-444. Nice quality but not 100% accurate. They will customize it any way you want, super fast service & delivery if you are in The States.
B-15 style Turkish Air Force fighter pilot jacket that I recently scored. Very well constructed of a thick cotton twill shell with loads of useful details: real mouton fur collar, bi-swing back with underarm gussets, snap-down epaulettes, two inside snap close pockets, interior lining is a...
Gibson & Barnes M-422a getting worn every day. Spent a weekend at Rhinebeck, NY and took a biplane ride in a 1929 New Standard D-25 (total thrill). The fur collar came in handy as we buzzed around the Hudson Valley in the open cockpit plane!
Gibson & Barnes M-422a. Jacket is getting daily wear literally rain or shine; wore it during a torrential downpour as the remnants of Tropical Storm Elsa lashed NYC, and again today (warm & partly sunny) aboard a boat at a commercial dive barge survey site in NY harbor.
Finally scored a mint condition Gibson & Barnes M-422a repro after numerous years of searching. The company is sadly no longer making this jacket but I was fortunate enough to find this one on the ‘Bay. It’s a very, very good copy (at a fraction of the cost of the top tier repro makers) of the...
Today it’s a 1979 Avirex G-1 (currently my favorite go-to, daily wear jacket). Back in those days Avirex was just about the only one making repro flight jackets and they were very good quality. This jacket has superb grainy, thick seal brown goatskin which is an exact match to the goatskin on my...
Bought a cape buffalo “vintage” G-1 from U.S. Wings. Not 100% mil-spec accurate but a really well-made jacket with real mouton fur collar (faded honey blonde) and the cape buffalo leather is very thick (1.2-1.3mm, according to their website), heavy yet soft and pliable. Has a great WWII vibe to...
Thanks @Will Zach, I’m fortunate that I have a job where I can wear a leather jacket just about every day (tho some days I wear textile jackets, usually Navy-surplus Aramid or Nomex flame resistant deck jackets).
Carrying all sorts of gear, strapping on a safety vest or harness or just working...
Yes this particular batch of black HH has an intoxicatingly aromatic (but not overpowering) scent of leather. And just enough leather “squeak” to remind me that she’s new and needs lots of wearing to break in. Love it!
