Thanks, guys! Very happy with all three. The Golden Fleece is the most special, but I do believe the Sportclad is the best fit, though the Windward is quite good too. Somehow it's the only jacket I've ever owned that might have slightly too short sleeves on me which I didn't know was possible...
Three vintage '40s jackets arrived while I was in Mexico.
Golden Fleece leather and wool, brown Windward, and Sportclad black motorcycle jacket. They all fit quite well overall. The Golden Fleece sadly had been hung improperly so the shoulders are messed up, but hopefully they settle down a...
Fit. For walking, laced boots are more secure in general and you can semi customize the fit by adjusting how tight or loose the laces are. I much prefer the look of engineers, but hiking in engineers would likely lead to twisted ankles more than hiking in lace up boots for example.
Also...
No resolution. Don't believe in new year's resolutions. That said, I'm probably going to acquire more vintage jackets and not buy any non-vintage ones.
Thanks! The pockets are fun. The Hercules is the more 'special' jacket, but it doesn't look like it gives en that it gets reproduced so much. Very few remakes of 50s square pocket jackets out there.
@RiteStuffBryan very interesting. I wonder if that's their own idea for the boots or if they were inspired by the two brands that supposedly came out with engineers first, Wesco and Chippewa. Of course, who really knows who actually came out with them first? Still, those catalogues are...
Yeah its possible they were made for train stokers, but we don't have any actual proof of that. I don't know of any photos of train workers wearing them. If anyone does have any I'd love to see them. Would be extremely informative. I wish we knew more about the early history of engineer boots.
Some early ads and a screenshot of Red Wing's website:
Obviously they did make work boots before this and since, but the original wedge sole moc toe, the 877, was not made for 'work.' It's got more heritage than the Iron Ranger though. That was invented in the 2000s to look like/imitate early...
It comes from Red Wing themselves. I've heard it and read it multiple times. It was for hunters. In fairness, they could be wrong. Levi's doesn't know their own history, but I've never seen any information that contradicts that the original 877 introduced in 1952 was designed for sportsmen, not...
The interesting thing is the wedge sole moc toes were originally made for hunting, which is sport rather than work. Now I see wedge sole moc toes on construction guys more than anything else (not usually red wing even).
As someone who wears and adores engineers, I can say that I would never...
I'd be wary of buying a Japanese market jacket as your first jacket if you haven't tried it on in person. They do tend to run small.
You don't need to measure a leather jacket. You can measure other jackets you have to give you some idea of what measurements you need in a leather jacket...
I think we need more photos to give full advice. Obviously, we can tell the jacket is too long, but it would be nice to have front facing photos as well as ones with a regular shirt for context and to see if there are other issues with the fit to advise the OP on.
