    Democracy

In academia, many of the older generation (65+) have stayed relatively close to where they were from, often in the same state or a few hours away. This is particularly true for those working for less prestigious institutions and in less prestigious sub-categories of the profession (such as...

Hipsters, tourists, and "artisinal" devil crabs...

I think what appealed to me about Julia Child is that she was so relatable. When I watch her, I feel like I too could cook whatever she was cooking. Right now my favorite cooking show is Julie Tabouli on PBS. She started as a local show in NYS created from a grant to teach community college...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I think one of the problems with the VA system is these hospitals are mostly in urban areas... the vast majority of veterans are rural. It's a problem to expect someone in poor health to drive 3 hours (or arrange a driver) for regular care.

I went through an agriculture program. It sometimes disturbs me that I did not become a vegan as a result.

As a point, a significant portion of beef in markets is from former dairy cows. When I went through Ag school they were recommending no more than 6 years (a dairy cow will easily live 12 and be productive at least until 10), bit you see a production drop off at around 4-6 years. They don't just...

Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

My former city poisoned it's lake. In the 1970s it was the dirtiest body of water in the US. You still can't swim there, or fish there (they don't even allow catch and release), or live within 100 feet. They've "remediated" the land around it, with the local mall getting major tax breaks to do...

Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

I highly doubt that they'll put condos in the old factories in my last rust belt city. Most of the old factory owners (I would put money on) are hoping an arsonist lights them before the city comes and makes them pay to take them down... along with the abandoned schools and churches. It's...

Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

The area I grew up always had a tourist faction, since it was settled. However, at one time it also had a strong agricultural industry, a manufacturing base in two nearby cities, and a military base in another nearby city. All of these were in commuting distance (about an hour to an hour and a...

Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

My hometown has been in steady slow decay all my life (I was born at the start of the 80s). There might have been "good old days" when there were good jobs, but that was when my parents were young. There's a certain apathy and physical rot you see in a dying place. Outsiders don't see it. You...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

The technological productivity paradox. We get more technology and then we have more stuff to do. The healthcare thing is a drag. To note, I didn't have a single billing issue that I had to deal with in my 9 months of cancer treatment. Not one. But I went to a community-based private...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

One of the things I will never do again is sign a statement that I'm responsible for bills denied by my insurance. I had a year long fiasco after an emergency room visit where a subcontractor double billed and upcharged my insurance. Both of these are fraud. These bills were denied on the...

Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

Every provider I see at my oncology office asks me each visit if i am "still able to perform the duties i am required to do at my place of employment" and if my "disability makes it difficult to do my job." I even have a questionnaire I have to fill out which asks me the same questions when I...

Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

My brother-in-law described me upon meeting me as "very domestic." I can cook, bake, sew, garden, and crochet. I can get blood out of a stone and feed a family of 4 on $50 a week (if I had to). I'm decently financially savvy. I can do home do-it-yourself projects that most men I know couldn't...

Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

I have zero sense of personal nostalgia. The past, and particularly my past, is better left there. I nearly have no idea why anyone would want to go backwards in their lives. I understand people had fewer obligations... but didn't you have less power and freedom? Perhaps people had much...

Did the Rules of Etiquette Provide a Greater Sense of Safety For Women?

Yeah, my own mother taught me how to hold a friend's drink when I was in high school before going off to college. (With your hand entirely over the top of the cup, such that you can only hold your drink and one friend's.) And my mother wasn't that "with it"... I assume this is something she...

    Agony column?

Urgh. I'm so sorry. But glad you're out. And I am so sorry your daughter doesn't have the father she deserves. That is really difficult, and I'm sorry.

    Agony column?

I'm doing much better. The house is on the market and we accepted an offer a bit above asking about 48 hours after the listing was posted. We will see what happens. I've had job training and am in my office. The bed bugged stuff is almost dealt with. And I've decided (for multiple reasons)...

We have no television recording devices (No DVR, no VCR). If we want to watch something, it's broadcast or the Rubbermaid tote with our DVD collection. We technically have basic non-HD cable (it's included in our internet package) but the box isn't hooked up. The quality is honestly better on...
