There were these tags in the 30's or so but they did seem to reappear around the early 50's in HCA hats, most often in some Cavanagh hats from about 1950 to 1955 for some reason but sometimes in other HCA brands I first got sucked into researching them when I bought an early 50's Western style...
1930's to early 40's Knox Forty, Clear Beaver hat Has 2 1/2 inch brim and 6 inch open crown. The sweatband is an older replacement with nothing written or stamped on it. See messages following this post. I had originally estimated a 50's date for this hat.
Mac Lachlan fedora, 2 1/2 inch Cavanagh brim and 6 inch open crown. The liner is the only thing that identifies this as a Mac Lachlan hat, but the liner is sewn into the hat in the manner of an original liner, so I don't doubt it's a Mac. Plus the felt is very nice and soft with a slight velour...
About 1930's Western style hat, unknown maker. 3 3/4 inch brim and 6 1/2 inch open crown. Another one to salvage. Needs new sweatband and cleaning. It's pretty nasty now. It was sitting in Albuquerque, NM in these photos.
Thanks a lot. That's the first decent-looking Maclachlan I've seen for sale with a somewhat wide brim. Hope I'm not disappointed with it. It might be at the bottom of the Maclachlan quality ladder, not sure, but it was by no means an inexpensively priced hat. I stumbled across it late last night...
Mallory Fifteen Pliafelt. Brim is just shy of 3 inches. It has the 1816 founding date so it's after the 1947 date when Stetson bought Mallory, but I suspect it's either late 40's or early 50's. Has a few moth nibbles and could use a good cleaning but it's still a very decent hat.
Here's another picture of what looks like an OPS tag fragment from 1951 to 1953 on this Caxton Twenty, along with an OPS tag from a Dobbs hat. This second photo borrowed from the Hatted Professor article on Dating Dobbs Hats, 1940 and later
Caxton Beaver Twenty. Brim is 2 inches, open crown is 5 1/2 inches. Looks like it might have the remnant of a 1951-1953 OPS tag on back of sweatband. I'd say the brim has a Cavanagh-type Edge.
Miller Fine Hats, Denver. 4X Quality. 3 inch brim and 5 1/2 inch open crown. There's no mfg tags. It's guessed that these date to the 40's or 50's. Notice the 5 stars attached to hat. This is the second Miller hat from this era that I've bought that has these same 5 stars. Coincidence? I took...
