Probably for the same reason Fender (and Gibson/Epiphone, etc, etc, etc) sell a whole line of 'Signature' instruments. Everybody has to draw inspiration from somewhere. I need some HAT help!!!!
3" brim is nothin'! This is my current favorite brim width, about 3"-3 1/4". Just IMHO, it's wide enough to clearly distinguish it from a wide brim fedora, but not so wide that you look like you just checked into a dude ranch. -

Just going off the one pic it does look like it may be a pre-war hat, but No. 1 quality was a long running designation off and on until the 60's or so, IIRC. Any inside tags? -

Found two references to Vargaus in the SJSU newspaper, earlier one being 1937, the latter being 1940. Unfortunately not particularly helpful for dating. -
