Very nice! Is this a new model, or a dealer exclusive? I really like the contrast ribbon/binding. The proportions are nice too -crown and brim look like they would work really well with the 'casual Sinatra' kind of 50s look - collar and tie, pegged slacks, Harrington jacket and loafers... -

I suspect much on this may depend on location. I am seeing the occasional wider leg on sale (though always with a disappointingly low waist - even if just 2 or 3 inches too low for me rather than the four to six of a few years ago), but I'm not seeing anything like an older, forties-inspired...- Edward

Mn, I don't think it looks so big. It's not "t-shirt only underneath", but it doesn't look *wrong* to my eye. Having a bit of room in the back like that seems consistent to a lot of vintage designs - if you look at Brando in The Wild One, for instance, his jacket fits tight at the waist and...- Edward

Interesting thread. I'm with the consensus, largely. The jacket doesn't look too big, but it's definitely been altered in pattern to suit contemporary fashion. For myself, I'd want the body of the jacket a good couple of inches shorter at least, and soe sort of tabs to pull in the fit at the...- Edward

Movie hats
Oh, interesting - I'll have to track that one down. I've seen that sort of false memory device used in more recent pictures (Total Recall being one in particular). Interesting to see it in a much earlier context - and not (as I think the ones I've seen it in before have been) scifi or horror. -
I love the Fed IV!!
The Squatter is one I've been looking at; the specs look to be very similar to the Fed. I already have a carbon grey Fed which limits the appeal of that one, but the bluegrass Squatter is definitely gonig on my list... :) -

I've received an email in from Hats Direct overnight which confirms that the Moonstone will be back in the DLX next month. I agree the black ribbon 'limits' it to wearing with blues / blacks /greys, whereas a more neutral ribbon would make it wear well with brown. I'm gonig to buy a production... -

Yeah, they're really a relic of an era when socks weren't elasticated and didn't hold up so well on their own. The ones in the picture look like they're being sported by someone who doesn't 'get' them; they should be worn with the elastic round the calf muscle at an angle, and the tab at the...- Edward

It's an interesting idea. Probably not many takers from among those of us for whom a big part of the attraction is the open crown and being able t shape it ourselves, but for newbies it might make all the difference if they're worried about messing up a nice hat which, albeit not the most... -

Did buy a new DLX last year, but that was probably one of the last dark browns they did. I'm sure I remember there being the same carbon / black / brown options at one... -

Hair length /bulk can definitely impact hat size. I was a UK 7 (US 7 1/8, EU57) when I was 12 and first got my uniform hat for Scouts; by the time I reached 16 and aged out, it was too tight, really. As a longhair at university, I was wearing caps in the main, all sized as Medium 57/58, so I... -

That's the key. Same with penny loafers. Laced boots and shoes you have the lacing to cinch in the fit; slip-ons, finding the right boot that works for you can be more important.- Edward

On a couple of pairs of boots I've had that were just a little too loose, I slipped in a pair of foam insoles of this type: Boots in question went from too loose to wear comfortably to all-day wearers.- Edward

As noted above, it's the old saw of 'Two states separated by a common language'. In the US, they call teeth braces braces, and trouser braces 'suspenders'. From memory, they call suspenders - which ladies use to hold up their stockings - a "garter belt".- Edward
