    Post New Hats Here!

Yep, that lid is just Peachy, sort of reminds of someone, now who could it be, oh yes, here he is, Sir Michael, well done:

    NEW 2010 Stetson Whippet

Brown ribbon looks good to me, but I have a bunch of earth tone clothes. Also, it looks like the ripple that was in the brim in the previous pictures is gone. I want to check out this one and the straw Brewster at Bencraft when they arrive - maybe the 7-5/8 will be big enough....

    NEW 2010 Stetson Whippet

I know it's odd that I remember this, but this hat is only available up to 7-5/8 - don't you take a larger size, like me? (maybe it's just because I subconsciously remember possible competition for vintage hats, yeah, that must be it...)

    NEW 2010 Stetson Whippet

It does have a bit of a wonky ripple to it, doesn't it? Not enough to alleviate my sour-grape sydrome, inasmuch as it doesn't come big enough for my melon....

    NEW 2010 Stetson Whippet

Looks pretty sweet - if you know, what's the crown height at the front pinch and the brim width? Isn't the ribbon brown? I thought the straw Brewster looked better, but now I'm not so sure...

    hat store in NYC?

Well, I've been treated dismissively at JJ more than once. Once the proprietor stretched a straw hat out for me after I specifically told him I wasn't interested in it, then when I failed to buy it, refused to help me any further. It was mystifying. On another occasion, after declining to steam...

    Modern Whippet...

Yep, silk finish, a bit shiny, really soft and flexy felt - love the fabric sweat. My sage Chatham has black liner, black sweat; Caribou Ashland has white liner, black sweat; Brown Ashland has white liner, brown sweat.

    Modern Whippet...

More eye candy Here's the interior of the Brewster I reviewed a while back - it has a nice eggplant-purple liner and a comfortable brown fabric sweatband:

Why is my crown so soft?

In general, a hat that is able to take a bash and hold it (as opposed to stiffly bouncing back) is considered superior. Good quality felt can be manipulated at will to give the hat the shape you want. As N-B posted, stiffener can be used to hold felt in a given shape, but most would not subject...

    Summer fedora

Well you seem to like your new Whippet, so you could pick up the straw version to have a matched set - there's an active thread about it now. I don't think it's been released yet, however. I don't think I could wear a felt in the summer, no matter how lightweight it might be, but I'm notoriously...

    Louisiana Oct. 1938 Crowd

Jeez, where's Waldo? That's a great photo - notice the three women at center left with miniature boater hats - still haven't found the beanies, though...

    NEW 2010 Stetson Whippet

You know, that image does look a little wonky, like it's been compressed in width. I stretched it 10% in width only, leaving the height alone and it looks more like a normal hat. I'd post the result, but the image file is indicated as being copyrighted on the Fedora Store site and I don't want...

Do you guys mean the Whippet or the Brewster?

need my Fed IV to shrink a little...I am impatient

Probably. Like Avedwards, I have a Chatham that has shrunk a bit and fits well now. Also, two Ashlands which started out a good 1/3 of a size too big, but are gradually becoming more fitted. It's a slow process, the Ashlands still have some fit strips in them after a year or so, but it's happening.

    NEW 2010 Stetson Whippet

That would be nice. Sometimes 7-3/4 are a little loose on me - that combined with a thin fabric sweatband and the 7-5/8 might fit. Skyvue, the Brewster was pretty flexible, it might conform to your LO noggin without too much trouble.

    NEW 2010 Stetson Whippet

Wow, I really like that one - it has the fabric sweat - it's even my preferred brim size - but it stops at 7-5/8? Say it ain't so, Joe....

    NEW 2010 Stetson Whippet

The felt version is a beauty - will the Panama Brewster have the same nice cloth sweat as the felt version?

    NEW 2010 Stetson Whippet

I agree - you can't assume poor quality just because of a bound brim - I think it looks good. Like Skyvue, however, my noggin is too big. I wonder if it will have the cloth sweat that's in the Brewster - that would be extremely comfortable on a hot day.

    An amazing event

That's nice to hear - my hat is usually treated well at Roseland in NY, although not always. Your story reminded of an event at Christmas. I was buying something at Century 21 (fancy clothes at a discount) and set my Stetson on the counter, crown down. The clerk grabbed it roughly by the...

    New poster seeking advice

Also Nobody has mentioned Akubra, so I will - they make the Hampton and Whippet, which are apparently the same basic hat but in different colors. The brim is 48mm or about 1-7/8 on each. Many on the lounge love Akubra, although I prefer Stetson felt myself - to each his own...
