I really appreciate all the pics. What an education one gets from following these forums. As it is said: "a picture is worth 5000 words." Great jackets, by the way.
Personal accountability just isn't emphasized in this ultra-litigious society. Yes, old-fashioned values were not perfect, but people generally took more responsibility for their actions. Acknowledging a Creator who expects us "creatures" to make the best of our world(while respecting others...
Fishmeok's photos provide a good variety of fits. There appears to be no rigid standard. Remember there were so many different manufacturers that there was no absolute uniformity. The clue may be : if it has a comfy fit and the look is acceptable to you then go for it.
Have you carefully checked for any markings? Use a magnifying glass and if there is any embeded dirt wash it off with a good detergent(steel will not be any the worse, since it has been exposed to somany years of humidity and other elements.) I have a Japanese bayonet that looks similar and...
G-1 of the '70's
Atticus,
In 1974 all of us in flight training were issued true naugahyde jackets. It was a time in-between the real leather. The Navy probably thought they could do some cost cutting, but eventually discovered that the plastic would not last as long as leather,so they...
A2 or Nylon
If you are strictly seeking the most utilitarian jacket in a situation that could expose it to damage go for the nomex. The leather jacket may be better for those times for relaxing or just looking great in public. I look for as many opportunities to wear my A2 as possible, as...
war stories

Thank you Andrew for your quick reply. I appreciate being better educated in such historical matters.
p.s. I thoroughly enjoy the photos of your excellent jacket collection.

Dismal A2 copy
What bothers me is that the store obviously has outrageously marked up the price and made false claims in using the term "A2". How can any store owner with a conscience attempt to rip off unsuspecting customers? The manufacturer most likely just used an inadequate description...
Authentic Irvin?
I apologize if this question has been asked, but is there any original Irvin with an outside pocket? I have seen some photos of jackest with pockets but
they may be only on repros. Thanks in advance for any info.
Faux A-2
The jacket does not pass for a serious A-2. It lacks many vital features(some already mentioned) such as collar hook, pocket and collar snaps The epaulets are also sewn down the entire length. Just enjoy it as a good bargain. However, if you do seek a more authentic looking A-2...
