I think with a proper (and often more than proper) amount of confidence one can wear just about anything. I'm known as the eccentric one in my group as it is, so there wasn't much reaction to the addition of hats, other than a few of my friends have started to, tenativley, wear hats.
Now that I'm thinking back on the movie Gangs of New York I'm starting to see something that I rather like. There are a lot of formal hats being worn in a decidedly informal way, even the colors are a bit off for a true formal hat (IMO) yet they are cool. I want to try and pull that kind of...
I wouldn't say my fashion is too deeply vintage thought I really enjoy pulling off some vintage styles. Despite how I usually dress, my interest in the Golden Age is very deep, steaming from the years between 9-14 when I read mostly hard boiled detective novels. Thats around the time my Dad...
Thanks!! Growing up we never had a TV so movies and shows never influenced my imagination nearly as much as books and comics. My Dad once bought me a bunch of old hard boiled detective novels from a library sale. I had over a years worth of reading!!
I was out to dinner last night with some friends. As we got up to leave I put my homburg back on and a gentleman in an old, beat-up, western hat. Stood up and said "Well that is a very nice hat sir." Then we shook hands and we went on our way. That was the nicest comment I've ever got on my hat.
Indy was the first hat, I remember in a movie, that I thought was cool. Then all the film noir guys, the hard boiled detectives always seemed to have either indestructable hats or hats with a lot of character. I guess I'm a bit strange but most of my interest in hats came from reading those old...
If I have a custom hat made should I tell the hatter how I wear my hat? I generally wear it pushed back on my head (unless its western) and I think it might change how the hat should be made? Since I'm new at this amazing new world, I'm still learning a lot so lemme know if I'm over thinking...
So I have a question for my fellow Loungers. If you happened to want a custom Homburg who would you have make it. I haven't seen anyone advertising their homburgs on the custom sites I've been to.
I'm sure most of the custom hatters can make one, I'm just wondering who does it more and who the...
I had a couple old western hats given to me by a friend of my grandfather, they were pretty beat up and dirty so not knowing anything about anything I asked my Mum how to clean felt. My Mum doesn't know about hats, but has made a lot of stuff out of felt. She said sand it, so I did. Those old...
For me it depends on the hat, but usually its a combo of grabbing the crown and brim, usually most the stress being put on the brim. I mostly wear western hats, and most of those are older, work hats so I grab them by the pinch. I'm pretty hard on my western hats, because in my opinion thats...
My new (to me) Stetson Western!!!! I'm excited I got this hat at Goodwill and want to do something cool with it its a funky brown color so I might leave it like it is for a while until something sounds right.
Indeed it does make sense, though I am not quite in his old turf. Close enough. Its funny I was just recalling when she made that comment, that I was called Billy the Kid in school because of my teeth and having a bit of a temper....
I was wearing my new homburg as I walked into work yesterday. One my my coworkers said "You look like you just shot Billy the Kid and stole his hat!" It thought that was great.
Have any of you turned a western hat into a homburg? I'm thinking of trying it sometime in the near future and was wondering if anyone else has done it?
I agree, but I recently found out that the Goodwill here throws out felt hats if they deem them to be unsellable and most are easily cleaned and so I have some I can practise with.
Now that I have a rather cheap wool felt homburg which I'm loving for what it is, I really want a nice fur felt homburg I really like the look of these hats on me. I'll be keeping my eye out for one this year, or I'll make one out of an old western hat if I can figure out how.
