S Lewis
Andrew, you are correct, the earliest S Lewis advert I can find that states they were a manufacturer dates from 19 Nov 1924, they also stocked an enormous amount of Gov't surplus, e.g. 2000 Sidcot suits! My understanding is that Nathan Jones was the main business force behind D Lewis...
S Lewis's
S Lewis's was a small store run by Sammy Lewis at 29 Carburton street, London W1. A 1930s catalogue I have states that S Lewis are a 'Motor Engineers and Government Surplus stores'. From the 50's onwards they basically sold D Lewis/Lewis Leathers motorcycle goods with S Lewis's labels...
Lightning Zips
Hi Mike73,
your dead stock Lightning zip is terrific, it must pre-date the one in the advert you posted as it doesn't have the Box open End (these days zip makers call these Retainer Boxes), so it must be something of a rarity, be a pity to use it after all this time.
Hopefully...
Lightning advert
Just noticed that the Lightning Fastener Overalls advert is actually from Nov 6th 1924, the crumbling interior of one magazine somehow made it into the crumbling exterior of an earlier edition. Sorry about that!
Lightning Zippers UK advert 1925
Here's the ad in all its glory, just realised it actually for a product made by the Central Rubber & Leather Co, which utilises Lightning fastners. Culled from a copy of the Motor Cycle Jan 1st 1925.
I'll upload it to the zippers thread too.
Regards
Derek
Re: Irvin jacket Zips
Thanks to Andrew for posting his Irvin jacket zip pullers, very interesting. Below is a Lightning puller on my late war multi panelled Irvin (originally bought from the Lewis shop in 1947 -unfortunately I've mislaid the receipt that came with it).
The puller is identical...
Tokyo Biker
Looks like he's kitted out in Lewis Leathers from the UK, the boots are their 191 Motorway boots, jeans are probably the LL 935 zippered back pocket variety and the jacket looks like LL's Cyclone or Lightning jacket. Lewis Leathers are very popular with the Japanese motorcycle crowd...
Zips history
I believe I've seen zip adverts in UK magazines dating from the early 1920's, Lightning fasteners were king back then.
Here's a nice picture of an aviation suit advertised in 1931, zips were presumably a new thing back then due to the fact that they were mentioned as a key...
DGL
Hi Alan,
I hadn't heard of DGL before and couldn't guess if they were anything to do with D Lewis Ltd or not. D Lewis Ltd continued to advertise their civilian flying wares in magazines such as FLIGHT during WW2 and offered discounts to officers in the RAF as well as a bespoke service on...
Godfry Lewis
Hi Alan,
nice to make your acquaintance.
Godfrey Lewis became a director of D Lewis sometime in the early 1950's, he was the D Lewis Ltd Company Secretary in 1951 and died around 1973/4.
D Lewis the company was originally set up by three brothers called Isaacs (Nathan, Michael &...
Belstaff Coat
Dear Forumites,
I'm new to the website and read the thread on the Belstaff rubberised/pvc coat with interest. I have a Belstaff catalogue dating from 1936 and it features a Senior TT Competition of similar design to the Ironhyde. The coat is made in "Heavyweight Black...
