I wanted to tap in to the great tree of knowledge for an answer to this: who made the AMF-era Harley jackets? A lot of them - the CHP/W styles - look like the equivalent Brooks: thin-looking shiny leather, distinctive ring-pulls. Others (I’m interested in the double riders) look different...
If anyone's interested, I have a nice older Aero Biker on the 'bay right now. It's marked a 42 but it fits smaller (I'm a regular 42 and it's way too small for me) - measurements on the listing. Harris tweed lining (think it's Harris though it might be Donegal - did Aero use Donegal?). Anyway...
Who are the go-to people in the UK for jacket repairs? I have a 1940s Swedish police jacket that needs a replacement zip and a collar repair. Aero say they're too busy.
I'm sure I've seen this asked before but I can't find the relevant thread so apologies.
Looks good. Lewis/Aviakit used to do one - I tried on a '70s Gold Top ex-police jacket the other day that looked almost exactly like your picture. It was as heavy as you like: a functional beast of a jacket.
You know, I'm thinking of Washington Heights, which wasn't/isn't Italian at all, right? Some friends lived there and I remember it having a really nice Old World feel and a couple of extremely good Italian delis and bakeries, which must have coloured my impression of the place. Guess I'm more...
Funnily enough, it's a leather jacket story. I'd stopped in to the CBGBs bar next door with a couple of friends in the very small hours, because you used to be able to get a cheap (and nasty) slice of pizza there. We were on our way home from Milano's. There was a gang of skinheads hanging...
Yeah, CBGBs was a tiny sweat-box but the energy... I'm weirdly proud of the fact that there was a patch of sidewalk just outside stained with my blood - it was there for years. I used to pass the site of Max's every day on my way to and from work. I think it's a Walgreen's now.
I lived in the East Village in the early 90s. Almost unbelievable now as I look back on it from rural Devon. That part of Manhattan was already gentrified when I last went back in 2006. Hard to believe CBGBs is gone.
An off-the-beaten-track suggestion: the Cloisters Museum (part of the MET) at...
Milano's Bar on East Houston. Peter McManus on 7th Ave and 19th used to have the best burger in NYC (my wife and I still argue about this). The Strand Bookstore is essential. Don't go anywhere near Midtown. The Guggenheim is also essential... I think my area of expertise is of a time and a place...
Name-wise, I'm quite taken with the ELMC Windward but not 100%, and there's that new Aero D-pocket that Mysteryo owns - is that going into production? And of course Norshor. But there's something about the Whitefeather.
Anybody seen one of these in the (horse) flesh? http://whitefeathermfg.com/produkt/1930s-aviator-style-jacket/
I really like the small collar (compared to the Bootlegger and those mysterious Block-bilts) and the slightly rough-n-ready look.
There are bargains out there - here's a beauty on ebay right now (not my auction): judging by the pencil pocket, it looks like an early 55j14 by L.W. Foster. With a re-lining and some conditioner...
