True vintage caps seem to go for over $100.00, which in comparison with vintage peacoats is ridiculous. They're probably just harder to find.
I've purchased one or two of the newer issues from military surplus stores and they just aren't like the one I had in the 70's. Usually they're...
U.S. Navy Watch Cap Design Questions
I've looked around for a vintage watch cap and don't really want to spend the bucks I see them going for. My wife is a great knitter and just made a sample for me based on a pattern we found on the web. She made a 1x1 weave with a 6-panel top at a length...
My First Vintage Hat? An Adam.
Though I do have a few fedora-type hats - a grey Akubra Fed IV and an Indy recreation by Lee Keppler - this Adam I found on eBay is my first vintage lid.
A while back I became enamored of the Whippet style with the bound edge but the cost of a nice one, though...
My wife's a knitter and says she'll make one for me. The downsides are 1) she may never get around to it and 2) she may get around to it and I may not like it but will have to wear it anyway!
That's extremely inexpensive. I was bidding for an original 40s cap this morning and. likely several I've seen of late, ended up going for $130.00 - or about 78 pounds.
I finally got a great vintage peacoat (1949) and would like to get a good watch cap. I used to have a navy issue one from the 70s but it's disappeared in the ether. I've tried several eBay auctions but it seems a bit crazy to pay $130+ for a cap, especially when my great peacoat was only $70...
Here's a shot showing the fit while wearing a sweater. Despite the seller saying the P2P was 21", I measure it 21.5 and perhaps 21.75". The sleeves may be a bit long but the good thing about their length is that your gloves stay inside even when your arms are extended. The gold (light brown?)...
Success! The third time was the charm. The eBay-purchased 1949 40R fits great, is in gorgeous condition, and the price was definitely right! I'll get some photos up soon. Thanks to all for the education, encouragement, and advice.
I'm in a tough position in that my chest measurement is 41 - right in between. I have suit jackets and overcoats in both 40 and 42, and so much of that depends on the make and source that I guess it doesn't really tell one much. The overcoats all have P2P measurements of 23" but I suppose...
Thanks for the reply. Looks like at the lower end isn't an exact science. That's the only reason I can be glad not to fit into a small size!
Here's another coat that looks pretty good but still has some odd numbers. The seller gives the measurements as below and he's confirmed them in answer...
I measured again today to make sure what it was and it is indeed 19.5", which is the P@P on my early 70s peacoat. Peacoat, wouldn't a P2P of 19+ be a 36 (19+19 = 38 - 2 = 36)?
A question: When I put the coat on over a sweater, the distance from the button shank to the end of its intended...
Strike 2
Well, after having to return my second eBay coat, I'm about ready to give up. This last one, a 1949, was in really good condition, but despite confirmations by the seller of dimensions (and his being given instructions on how to measure) the P2P was 19 rather than the stated 21...
I'm with you, Peacoat, and will leave it at that.
Yes, your last post is helpful. The last two winters we've had in Wheaton (yes, a western suburb of Chicago) have been somewhat mild, but this year we've had a lot of snow and several plunges to zero degrees. I'm an army brat who's lived all...
Peacoat, my chest measures 40 and I'm 5'-9 1/2" tall. I compared the measurements of the 1949 coat mentioned above against those of my early 70s coat and found that the sleeve length matches nearly exactly and that the body length is perhaps 1.5" longer. I like the sleeve length on my 70s...
The photo below is of a 42R. It was too large in the body so I'm now looking at size 40 (a 38 would be a stretch - literally). The question then is Short or Regular. From looking at the photo, would you say that the coat's bottom is hitting at the right point? What about the sleeve length...
