    Hair cuts

Got a klazzy/snazzy 1930s cut-NO sideburns! A 1 tapered up to long on top with a pompadour effect (long on front, shorter/medium on back 'n' middle.) Best haircut I've got, the only guy who knows how to TAPER and BLEND and not make it look like a bowl cut is Dusty of Great Clips in Belle Halle...

    Tie sizes throughout the decades

Thanks a lot! But do you know the 20s widths? They had some pretty weird transition looks then, like the jazz suit and a detachable collar going out of style.

Couldn't you wash linen? And why would celluloid be cheaper than linen, wasn't it newer and more expensive then?

    Summer....

I'd recommend the classic workwear thread. Check out ads from that era too for 30s-40s workwear-they had style.

So you do comb over the front combed back, creating a quiff?

Thanks, widebrim. That helped me out.

Just bought some Vitalis tonic-it has a surprisingly good hold, like RC. Smells like alcohol; I like it.

    Lapels

Thanks for the help, and yes, there is a lot more to a suit than the lapel. Isn't a 3 1/4 inch lapel pretty modern and balanced?

    Lapels

I don't know how wide lapels were from the 20s-50s. I thought from the late twenties to mid fifties wide lapels were de regueur, but in a lot of thirties movies (particularly "Bringing up Baby", where Cary Grant wears pretty reasonable, medium lapels with a slim cut suit) I see pretty standard...

    Tie sizes throughout the decades

I've been wondering, what were the widths of tie from the twenties to sixties? I know the sixties were about 1.5-2 inches wide, but I don't know exactly for the other decades. I see thirties-forties ties wide sometimes then medium, so I'm not so sure. Anyone know the widths?

    Pomade

For your style did you first comb your hair back, then combed over it but still keeping the front combed back creating a poof?

    Show us your suits

Could anyone estimate a date on this suit on eBay? Here's the item number: 270548824130 I'm thinking early 60s, but not late 50s continental because of the extra-thin lapels-but the (I forgot the word) whole fit is high, the buttons, armholes, waist, etc.

That's pretty cool! I'd like a pencil mustache...

    Show us your suits

Yeah, Roger Sterling. His suits always seemed out of place because they were db but still had thin lapels and a slimmer cut of the sixties.

Nice mustache! Do you use mustache wax like from Pinaud?

Skyvue, I think your suit looks late 50s-early 60s because of the lapels, not mid 50s or 1949-am I wrong anyone?

    Vintage Workwear

That's my favorite workwear look too! Waist-length short sport jacket, leather or fabric, a tie with tie bar and long, curved thirties collar, ankle-height leather boots, and more formal workpants. It looks dignified while still practical

    Hair cuts

They said you can't do much with curly hair - not true! You can turn it wavy and style it or even keep it curly combed which looks very good!

Nick D, I think it's if you want to wear a wing collar. I've also seen that feature on many modern shirts, so it may be a carryover.
