I prefer plain-front. Just seems to fit khakis better somehow. With pleated, you quickly lose the crease in the pants leg and then the pleats look strange.
I'll check that out. I like the profile of the DAK style ones much better than the British style, and my 59cm head is generally too large for a vintage pith helmets.
Saving money on the helmet is good anyway, considering the liner on the Hessen helmet is completely wrong (adjustable type...
By the way, I just discovered this. Hessen Antique is reproducing the DAK pith helmet. I think this would make an excellent civilian helmet, with the simple removal of the insignia shields. It is hard to find pith helmets in anything other than the "Zulu Wars" British shape, and the DAK style...
I wear Bass Weejuns almost every day. I find them really comfortable, and they have a leather sole. The one downside is that the finish on the leather is sort of plasticy. If I had the cash I would get the Alden cordovan penny loafers.
What is the deal with the turn-down collars? Bush, Cheney and Perlman were all wearing them. A turn-down collar is on the low-formality end of acceptable collars to wear with a dinner jacket. I can only assume that a bunch of the guys at this dinner figured "Hey, I wear it with black tie, so...
This is the only photo I have seen so far, and I am not impressed. I wish it showed more of a closeup, but you can see the main problem from here. The white waistcoat should never be showing below the tailcoat. Bush's waistcoat is obviously sized far too long, compare it visually to Prince...
The problem is that it seems not to be an act, it is just the way he is. Of course, the fact that politicians think that their voters prefer slob "everymans" is disturbing itself. Perhaps just another symptom of "prole drift."
I think the real question is "Why do white-tie when you can barely get black-tie right?"
Look at the sleeve length, trouser break and bow tie, compared to the PoW. Also look at the lack of pocket square, as well as the use of a cummerbund (instead of a vest) even though it was winter at...
I think one thing which hasn't changed is the experience recruits have before going to basic training. One issue during WWII was that Americans being inducted en-masse had virtually no prior military experience or training. You had to teach them how to function in a disciplined environment...
I guess it is all subjective. I find I sleep better outdoors without a tent at all, just wrapped up in my blanket and greatcoat. The only situations where I think a tent is really useful is in an area with constant rain, or one where the wind chill causes major problems otherwise.
I would...
Looks like I will have to pony up the dough for some of these expensive repops soon. JC Penney no longer carries my favorite "Retro Chino" khakis, and the three pairs I have saved up will only last so long...
The best canteens are the sort that have a wool/fabric cover. After getting the cover wet, as it slowly dries the evaporation helps keep the water inside the canteen cooler. Wool works best, as on the WWII German and US Civil War canteens. The US WWII style also works OK.
If you mean in the US military, then I don't really know and would be interested in learning about it as well. I only know about German and Russian training of the period.
