You know you are getting old when:

I am getting close to that stage I fear. I have gotten into a cycle of needing new glasses about every 12 to 18 months which is a real bummer. My eye doctor says that your eyes change a great deal between 50 and 60 years of age, so at 57 I still have a little way to go before things...

    Loungers' Pets

We had one JRT that justed loved the water, swimming was a real pleasure for him. The two that we have now just hate water. Looks to be very dog specific, and not breed specific :-)

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I used a broken off match stick yesterday to do just what you describe, it was not a door hinge, it was something else, but the broken off match really did the job !

    Show us your motorcycles!

Those were and still are very goods bikes, simple to work on and parts are still easy to get. I have had several BMW bikes ( R80 GS, R65 RS ) but the R60/5 is still my favorit. The modern BMW's are high tech wonders, but they just do not do it for me.

    Things I'll miss when retired

The decompression thing worries me as well. I work in the automobile industry and the speed here is high as well, I have about 5 years or so to good and am now starting to try to slow the pace a little and adjust the focus more to private things. I am also looking into options of doing some...

    The Origin Of "The Fifties"

When I lived in Detroit during the late 1980's I worked with a guy who was teenager at the time of the riot in 1943. He said that his Dad worked at Ford in Dearborn where Ford security people actively looked for people to make their way east of Woodward and join in the fight as they feared that...

    The Origin Of "The Fifties"

Lizzie, good point about the individual not living in isolation, this is an issue today. In many cases the individual is osolated, in particular in old age. The big multi-generation families of the past are gone now so there is no community of family members to look after the old and the...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

I work in technical sales and take a very similar approach to selling my products as well. I as well always point out the limits, and weaknesses of our products. Never took the " It is the best thing since sliced bread" approach.

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

I have had the tire problem on modern vehicles a couple of times. In both cases the wobble showed up at low speed, but disappeared as I increased speed. Also in both cases there was a delamination of the tread to the carcus of the tire, that in both cases was visable in the form of...
