This is an interesting thread. My experience with ebay seems to have been somewhat different from other people's. I have found that prices commanded on ebay, at least for the things that I am interested in, tend to be higher than they would get in an online store or a brick and mortar store...
I may be wrong to think of them this way, but in my mind they are closely associated with WWII vets in the fifties, sixties and seventies. In my imagination these are what Ike, Johnson, and Nixon wore, though I have no idea if they actually did.
I have always loved Gunboats, but never heard that term before. My grandfather wore them all his life. I have two pair of giant Florsheim Imperial wingtips from the 60s-70s that are exactly like his. I don't wear them too often because they are so giant and heavy, but whenever I find a pair...
Definitely from the 50s. Those aren't embossed. They are inlay: you can tell from where the stitches are. Do an ebay search for "cutout boots" or "peewee boots" to find similar.
Eastman made all their Werbers with a diagonal grain across the right chest in exactly the same spot. How's that for historical accuracy! Also, that little puff out on the right pocket is the same. Remarkable coincidence.
Steve, I am starting to get very interested in why you are lying about...
I play racquetball in my shurons. Two months ago a racquetball hit me right in the left lens. The glasses fell to the concrete. I picked them up, wiped them off, put them back on, and continued playing. I have also dropped them numerous other times without a problem. Great glasses...
I wear the ronsir zyl in black and heartily recommend them for their quality. I get compliments on them all the time. Made in the USA and well put together. Allyn Scura makes a similar repro that isn't nearly as nice as the Shuron.
I have found a few of those at thrift stores and they never have the belt! Somewhere there must be a guy who has forty of those belts and not a single jacket. Anyway, that is a "Jacket, Man's, Cotton Tan Tropical." And I think the spec number is Mil-J-4954.
Keep in mind that I am only talking about the Rayon shirts made through the 1960s. I only mentioned it because modern Aloha shirts in size Medium other than the Japanese repros are way too big for me, while vintage Mediums fit me perfectly. Vintage smalls are generally too small for me, but...
Sorry, but the originals I have seen are actually cut exactly the same as Gab and other sport shirts of the 40s and 50s. Go on the Bay and check the measurements on some Rayon originals if you don't believe me. By comparison, modern Aloha shirts are cut insanely large, which is probably to...
Picked up three pair of unworn surplus military boots from the early seventies at the mormon thrift store. All in my size of 9E; they were $2 per pair.
Ben Davis is great! It used to be easy to find Ben Davis around here, but haven't seen it in a while. Maybe because I haven't gone to an indoor swap meet lately? Even when they did have it, they only carried the crazy large sizes because that was the style with the gangsters. Have been...
Bill's Khakis cost about the same as the Buzz Rickson Khakis. Actually cheaper if you order several pair directly from Hinoya or Mil-Mil. The difference is that the Rickson's are indistinguishable from originals and made from better fabric with correct buttons and markings.
If you really...
While in theory I am not a fan of the short sleeve and tie thing, I think you pulled it off there. Very Theodore Shackley/Dulles Bros. There is the NASA thing as well, but when it is a knit tie it looks old school wasp.
