This is going to be my last post in this thread (maybe on the lounge for awhile) because its pretty obvious that an apples to apples discussion of what raw materials are better, has turned into a "you don't know what your talking about, Winchester's products are great" back and forth.
Let me...
I'm with Alan as well.
Tony, I am in no means undermining your experience, and I apologize if it came off that way. I have handled quite a few vintage hats myself and have refurbed quite a few hats as well. And in my opinion, just because a good finish and shine can be gotten from a...
I think there are couple factors to be considered here. Will Winchester Rabbit/Wild Hare raw bodies polish or finish as well as Winchester Beaver raw bodies.....NO. But to be very honest, I don't feel that Winchester 100% Beaver bodies are that good either. Most of the amazing "golden age" hats...
Well, this info has taught me a couple of things......
Stetson used many different block numbers and profiles for their hats through the years and new ones keep popping up every day. One of my hopes is that one day a block will show up in an antique store or ebay with one of these block numbers...
Well, I do not know how many 40's/50's hats I have owned/sold/traded (its a lot), but I can honestly tell you that the Hat Corp 20, 40, and 100 designation was better than ANYTHING Stetson was producing at the time. A Stetson 7xCB or Stetson 100 didn't even hold a candle to the Knox 100. I...
Thanks again, Steve! I believe you have one or two hats with original crown clips, don't you? Those have always fascinated me. I have seen advertisements for them in the American Hatter publications, but have never seen one in person.
Here's another piece to the puzzle....
I uploaded pictures of my 1916 Pacemaker a couple years ago. Unfortunately the lot number was completely unreadable, but I never tried manipulating it on photobucket to try and see if I could make out the numbers.......
Behold!!!

The Hat Corp Of America (Knox, Dobbs, Cavanagh, etc) "20's" are such extremely nice hats. The felt is so incredibly dense and strong, it forms like clay. I have owned quite a few of them. I also owned a Dobbs 40 once and that felt was just about as nice as the 20's, just finished slightly...
How the hell is this hat not sold yet?????? Its too big for my peanut head, but I know the 7 1/8's are out there. This is a SUPER rare hat folks.....much rarer and higher quality than those Whippets/Strats you all like to bid up on ebay.

It's my pleasure, Alan. :yo:
I'm just glad that "THE EVENT" had a fairly readable Lot number. Now, we have another piece to add to this very large Stetson puzzle. :)
Thanks so much, Gentlemen!!
Steve, at first I thought there might have been a crown patch as well. Upon further inspection once I had it in my hands, it doesn't appear there was one. It must have just been a weird shadow. The inside of the crown is just as smooth ad the outside, leading me...
