    It's not a hybrid, it's just an earlier style of morning dress. The trim used to be a relatively common sight, but is rarely seen now. Prince Charles still wears it on occassion. Wing collar with a bowtie also was not unheard of.

    I would wear it often if not for the crest. Not that I don't like the look, but I generally don't wear emblems (the Gloucestershire Regiment buttons on my WWII greatcoat are the exception).

    The outer pleats are darts. I have a pattern from the same period that has them darted as well. The inner pleats are stitched further down than is usual, never seen that before.

    Also with a galleried, the galleries are textured, and are extensions of the rim. By close to the eye I mean close like spectacles.

    Yes, a monocle must be ground to be placed close to the eye, and must have a textured rim to help keep it in place. Without these it's a quizzing glass. Eustace Tilley uses a quizzing glass.
