To be honest most my of own hats I've tried to soften them rather than stiffen being Akubra's lol. But I would use a blonde shellac unless the hat has a strong colour then it may not matter so much if blonde or natural. Ok, as to my understanding (I could be wrong and often am lol) the Different Grey's used in order from Darkest to light. That's the thing, whom did you buy those hats from? I think it's whom you bought your hat from that had that model Akubra hat custom died for them and then on-sold to end user (Us). Main difference between the two is the crown form. Cooper Pedy is more center pinch but still a fine/small tear drop while the Cattleman is wide open full teardrop uptop. Think Kevin said they (JJ's) have no larger sizes left though. As to vent holes I guess it's a personal choice. I use what my grandfather used for his hat (well all his leather items, saddle, boots etc even all his wooden gear and furniture I think he used it on.) and that's just a simple bee's wax with orange oil. Doesn't sound like it's old or had that much use, still looks good you say. If you add up the time/days/hours.... This hat although much older has about 7 years everyday real world use, or 12+ hours a day wear if you like. 6 days ago we threw it in a washing machine, then in the bath for an hour...- Silver-Wolf

Yeah, vintage can be hard to find good hats in large/Xlarge sizing. You can finds cheap mid to small sizes far cheaper and more often. Here in Australia most cheap ones sell on a place called "Gumtree", Facebook market place and eBay as already suggested also. Though I've seen them asking...- Silver-Wolf
