Actually, minus the Luftwaffe Eagle, and the shoulder boards, I like the brown jacket better. It has a little more character. Where can I find one like that without spending as much as I would on a small car?
I haven't seen anything but the previews yet. But, from what I've seen, the key is, "location, location, location." You go to a location like that and you can't miss, no matter what direction the camera is pointed. I'm sure that as impressive as it is, it can't compare to actually being there...
Is this just a hat thread? Any pictures of Ms Kidman's riding boots? Maybe over in the "adventure gear" section?
I have it "from a reliable source" that, Dehner, made her boots, for the movie. Two for Ms Kidman, and two for her stunt-double.
I'm sure it's been mentioned that the Luftwaffe didn't have an "issue" coat for pilots, like the RAF, and USAAF. They were usually privately purchased motorcycle jackets. So it goes to reason that they would be perfect for that use.
I do think the brown ones have a little more character. Or...
What's the difference? Hmmmmm.
After reading all the posts here in this thread, I've come to the conclusion that there are actually two subtly different, "looks," that are vastly different in their implications.
There's the "rugged adventure look," as exemplified by Ewen in that first photo...
Did you family have a samovar? Heated with dry pinecones, to add a hint of the resin's flavor to the tea.
Or a crumpled Pravda, as the Soviet era joke goes....
Bookster, I had forgotten that you are a member here.
Your tweed jacket turned out great! Though it's too nice for riding.
I've looked at the Mountain Horse jackets. They had a ski style jacket with side vents. As I mentioned though, They have a weird idea of "unisex" sizing. Usually a...
I would say, the farther back you go, the more fashion influence there is to uniforms. The more modern uniforms tend to be more practical.
I'd say Napoleonic era was the height of fashion. Back when you'd wear your best dress uniform into battle. The more modern weapons, required the...
Yes. And, no.
Officers, at least in the US Army are required to purchase their uniforms. So, you can to an extent, purchase a uniform that may be a little better than the 'issue' one, but you can't really make any variations to it.
In the Army Manual 670-1 "Wear and Appearance of Army...
Thanks. I was looking for a horse related forum.
I've been looking for a ski jacket that would work for riding. You'd think a company like Patagonia, as outdoorsy as they are would make something that would work? They make clothes for climbing, skiing, kayaking, hiking, and everything else...
Thanks for the input!
I've bought stuff from Dover Saddlery before. The Tailored Sportsman breeches are great.
Most of the stuff in the catalog, is geared toward ladies. Dover's idea of a "large" coat, is a 42. I need a 44, or 46, depending on how the sleeves fit. I got a great tweed hacking...
That's what I like about the British. STYLE! US service men were given the "ruptured duck" pin...
"The pin was to permit Honorably Discharged military personnel to wear their uniform for a period of time after they left military service due to their inability to afford civilian clothes, while...
Great photo!
There's a few pictures of Patton in cut down three-strap boots. Seems to me, to be done to be able to wear them with regular trousers, as opposed to breeches.

Dehner makes what they call 12" Trooper boots.
The three-strap cavalry boots were popular from the 1930's, to about the end of WWII, then you start to see some of the three-strap boots being cut down to a 12" height in military photos.
I understand that rust colored breeches are acceptable in Virginia, for a fox hunt. Practical reasons, that Virginia clay.
I agree, at least in English riding, there is more adherence to tradition, rather than the whims of fashion. (Other than the addition of modern fabrics, and safety...
