Noir hero for the modern era. The Big Lebowski

I never got noir vibes off of TBL. I guess it has some elements of noir in the plot, but the visual effects are certainly not noir, and it is a very comic film--also not noir. Interesting insight, though.

Ever yearn for a vintage name?

I dunno... unless you have a particularly modern-sounding given name, like Dakota, chances are no one would look at you funny if you were dropped in the 30s and you told them your name.

    I hate the 2000's

I did say multiple times that most of us were not advising him to break the rules. Perhaps I was wrong in my calculation of pro-rule breakers being in the minority. But no more wrong that your statement above that "we all jumped..." (emphasis added). In any case, I, myself did not advise him to...

    I hate the 2000's

If the OPer was intentionally flaunting the rules, I somewhat agree with you. But I assume he was not (he seems surprised enough at the correction to have posted it here), and the remainder of my post operates on that assumption. I render unto the OPer the benefit of the doubt. I am a...

Nerd Alert III: Sarah Connor Chronicles

T2 takes place in '95, it just came out in '91. Connor is indeed ten years of age at that point. T3 and T:SCC both claim that John was 13 in T2, which would have it take place in 1997, just a month or so before Judgement Day. What will really mess with your head is this: every time they push...

    I hate the 2000's

I dunno, seems pretty silly to me. Anything but skintight clothing can be used to conceal some weapons. Heck, most students carry backpacks, in which they could have rather large weapons. So a jacket rule seems pretty pointless to me. Then again, it's pretty pointless to look for rhyme or...

Adventure! Fedora Lounge Folks in Action!

The clothes may be ill-fitting and modern, but hey, it was a whole lot of action!

Very true. Of the five pair of boots I own, my jump boots and my steel-toed Redwings are the heaviest.

Evolution of Colonial English Accents - Australia and New Zealand

As a child, Sam Neill started using the name "Sam" in place of his given name "Nigel" because of the kiwi expression "Nigel no-mates" for someone with no friends.

    I hate the 2000's

Righto. Perhaps the principal was enforcing the dress code? At all the public schools I attended, hats were not allowed, period. Either way, I probably wouldn't get on someone's case if they had their hands full. I fumbled enough with hats and full hands when I was a JROTC cadet. lol

Apparently, you posted while I edited. Sorry for the confusion. ;)

    I hate the 2000's

Emphasis added. Are the rules different for top hats? Because I was sure this was the case. ETA: Apparently, some consider hats acceptable in public indoor areas, i.e. the commons mentioned. On the other hand, my father and my retired military instructors taught me hats off indoors, period...

    Reenacting the Warsaw Uprising?

In the end, yes. But the ZOB (Jewish Fighting Organization, led by Mordecai Anielewicz, one of my personal heroes) held off the Germans for longer than the entire Polish Army. The ZOB was quite successful in the opening skirmishes of the uprising. I think these could be tastefully...

    NEWS BOY CAPS

Diggin' the hat, diggin' the beard. :eusa_clap I ordered a gray herringbone B!Wear after reading this thread. Brett got it to me pretty quickly. A lot more material than I was expecting, but it's grown on me. I pull the excess material to the right, and it looks great. And not too beret-ish.

Help me ID this type of cap

Very cool. I think the Blockade Runner link is the closest to what I was looking for, but the others certainly fit the bill.

    I hate the 2000's

Hmm. I would think the intent of that rule pointed to things like jean and leather jackets, as opposed to blazers. In such a vague situation, I think your principal could have definitely cut you some slack--either let it go, give a warning, or just ask you take off your blazer, for pete's sake...

Which is really not that much of a problem, because unfortunately, today's gym class largely consists of sitting against the gymnasium wall, or walking around the track. :eusa_doh:

    I hate the 2000's

Whenever I dressed up for school, I only got compliments from the staff (and most of the students who said anything, too). It had its problems, sure, but they didn't dare go this far. This is ridiculous. It seems your public school (I assume it's a public school) has found and especially foolish...

    modern military boots

I'm obviously wrong, considering y'all's experience, but I was under the impression, supported by my own (very limited) experience, that leather, at least standard leather (not suede-out) is pretty good at keeping your feet dry. Does it just take a longer period of time in the water to get them...
