Well, you're right that in absolute dollars the amount is more, but I think inflation over the past 60-70 years would mostly account for that. $10 was a significant amount of money in 1940, equivalent to $162.62 today. This inflation calculator can help you understand the relative value of the...
I see three aspects of the difficulties today with retailing high-end hats in a physical store, especially one which is devoted to menswear generally rather than a specialist hat shop.
First, hats have become a specialty item. Only a very few customers walking into a suit store will be...
Oh, and Bowlers on parade:

Super jelly of that collection. The top left hat is something I've been after for a while, late 19th century mid-height English stovepipe. I question how many exist in my size. As for the brown one, I had an opportunity to get one on German ebay, but it was a little too small so I didn't bid...
I used to wear one everywhere (not every day though) back in HS, but I don't have any pictures. These days I only wear them on holidays (nuit blanche, new years, possibly St. Patties etc) or occasionally when I'm celebrating and not going anywhere with a dress code. In my field conformity and...
Great pic! I googled it and I see it's from the 1920s, and that Raleigh became defunct in 1992. It's a shame so many of these great old shops are gone now. The hat looks brand new, like it could have been bought last week and never worn. And yet it's certainly over 50 years old.
Knox Premier Quality Silk Top Hat, size 7 3/4 (XXL)
Got a very decent price for it, had to pass over a fine bowler as a result though. Arrived today, fits magnificently. Complete set, all in excellent condition. Hat in near-mint condition. Sweatband appears unused. Sold to me by a member of...
Knox Top Hat XL 7 3/4
7 3/4 Knox Silk Top Hat. Mint condition, not sure of the era but probably early-mid 20th century.
I'm putting more photos on the toppers thread.
No I can't feel it, as it sits above the ear. However the lack of a back seam makes it more difficult to determine front and back by feel, without flipping the hat over and looking.
Until very recently (the last two decades), all Lock & Co standard bowlers featured a similar side-seam. I asked them about it, but they didn't respond. Here's my lock bowler from 1982:
Edit: also see mercuryfelt's post on page 66:
Here is an interesting video of milliners making top hats for the stage. While their hats are sometimes a bit rough, they do a decent job and use traditional materials: http://youtu.be/5h4881kAEjI
I don't know much about Knox's production data, and frankly it's probably lost by now. Are you interested in selling it? If so, send me a private message as I may be interested in buying.
What exactly is a lord's hat? Several of the bowlers are of the soft, shapeless kind without much of a brim curl, that women seem to prefer. The picture of Kiera at the bottom 'wearing' the Lock for Chanel is the best one. It's a less-strict definition of women "in" bowlers ;)
