I don't get it... the ebay stuff I'm looking at is under $100 and some real good stuff potentially under $50.
Looking at Vintage Trends, the good ones are $85 and up.
Mataglap,
I can't speak for Vintage Trends but don't forsake ebay completely because they have some very promising size 38 coats at the present, Kerseys from the 60's. One is an unstencilled '67 jacket from Colorado with a crisp-looking clothing tag. (Shows less cleaning, hence less wear) Sorry...
Metaglap- I absolutey agree with JanSolo. My weight and measurements are exactly the same as yours (waist 32 inches) and I have no less than four vintage coats from 1944-1980. Size 38 is not snug, leaves room for a sweater (like any gob should have when especially nasty), but fits extremely...
Shades of Eddie Bauer!
Sorry to know the details. It was better living in ignorance thinking that Filson was just missing the mark these past couple of years. Betcha we're sunk and some Spiegel-like company will have them selling Filson-embossed leather key fobs and tin cloth pinic blankets in...
You have the exact coat that was issued to me at NTC Orlando (Co. 048) in January 1969. I can attest it was a fabulous version even with the flannel pockets which did not rip or pill in over 25 years. Yours fits perfectly! The guy you got to model it looks great too :) My advice, don't wait to...
Looks very good on you, hits just right!
I note how the hems line up from right and left side when buttoned.
Vintage coats are a good trading card when looking to move up.
For a while I, too, was seduced by the glowing descriptions of the BR coat to the point where I took a trip to NYC's Orchard Street to eyeball one for myself. With my my stock 1981 Sterlingwear as a reference and wife as a soundingboard/critic I tried on three coats in two sizes.
In no...
You aren't missing anything when you pass on the Buzz Rickson version.
I have tried on three and they are almost a caricature of the original- a disappointment at any price.
BTW, what's the big deal about buttons falling off if the rest of the coat is nice? Get them sewn on right.
The new...
Hi-
I can help you a little. Not sure what you are looking for but if you want White's boots, the best place to buy them is from White's directly because they have their own factory store. Baker is a reseller. I do not know what you mean by "choosing your own model rebuilt". Do you want one of...
What's your size? In the past ten days ebay has run coats from 34 to 46,
all issue, some vintage. You have to vary a few search termsto find them
sometimes, eg., "peacoat" is different from "pea coat"
Please check the Alden boot for work. Although very popular now with the [Indie] style crowd, the boot was originally part of their orthopedic line. It has a distinctive last design which may work for your foot. It is a 6 inch boot, not like what people think of as a work boot these days which...
I think it looks great but you don't need the clasp. It's like you're making an apology. I wear a pea coat with a tie to performances, dinner dates anywhere except where you really should wear a suit.
But, if a strictly indoor event, you either have to be able to take off the jacket and just...
Hi Dep,
The big draw with the Sterlingwear is simply that they make the ones for the Navy. All the other "official" manufacturers are gone. You would have to go vintage.
There are a lot of real nice pea coats you can get including Schott, Fidelity, Spiewak (Golden Fleece and Excalibur), etc...
more follow-up on Sterlingwear
Dep's info was correct: You can buy the genuine issue coat from Sterlingwear direct for $250. Furthermore, Michelle is indeed the customer liason. Just show up there if you can and they'll give you a tour of the plant.
I have been to the factory in East Boston...
Yes, I agree the '66 would be essentially the same especially since the weights on yours were.
No, no family. The miracle was that in addition to the "clothing factory" tag, there was still a legible neck tag with the #NXSX65086. Using the information from a militaria forum, I interpolated the...
Ok- got to a store with a digital scale:
1944 is 4-1/4 lbs
2010 is 3-3/4 lbs
can't get to my 1966 it's seems marginally heavier than both but has more material in the flaps.
All coats 38R
Gee, judging by the folds either side of your pecs you have material for the jacket to close. The back is fabulous. Length is right on. Sleeve length shouldn't be any shorter considering natural creasing that is already occurring. And you want to be able to stretch out your arms out for riding...
