Yup, as a population, we've been getting bigger. Has to do with genetics, preferences and lifestyle.
And I don't just mean "fatter", we're physically getting larger.
6' 1" used to be a very tall man at one point, now it's nearly common place.
Makes my 5' 10" (7 5/8) feel kinda short most...
How do you travel with a hat?
You wear it!
:)
Ok, now that we have that answer out of the way here's the question again.
How do you travel with a good hat? Not a baseball style cap, but a good vintage fedora or similar.
I travel by airline a lot and the thought of it in the overhead bin is...
Well, now, this is interesting:

Not much more than a turning and a decent wood clamp....
While waiting for a couple hats to arrive in the mail, I'm already thinking/researching altering them.
I've pretty much decided to cut the brim down a bit on an Akubra Sunny river to make it more general wear than cowboy. So I need a way to cut it down if I decide on that.
A search revealed...
Thanks.
However, I do wish that added brain capacity translated over directly to increased billfold filling capacity.
Alas, such has not been the case for me and it seems my new interest in the classic "chapeau" is going to make the gap even larger.
:)
Someone got a great hat at a good price: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Rare-Grey-Akubra-Snowy-River-Aussie-Outback-Bush-Hat-57-Fur-Felt-Australia-/400605802619
I would have outbid them if it would have been my size. But alas: far too small to make it work....
I dunno. Sometimes it looks like a stingy with a porkpie top, other times is looks like a porkpie with side dents.
Custom hat I guess.
But i'm certainly no expert on hats. Just an afficionado.....:)
Well, I did a little more fooling around today with measurements.
The ellipse calculators say the 7.5X8.25 measurement works out to just over 24" circumference, 24.768 to be precise.
Then I took a pair of out side calipers and measured 7.5 and 8.25. Both measurements slide over my skull with...
I figured it was cheap enough to take the risk. I found it with about 15 mins left in the auction so I did what research and figuring I could and then tossed caution to the wind with 2 mins left.
It could turn out to be a good ol' hat, or it could be a total bust.
Worse comes to worse...
I was cruising eBay looking for a decent "knock around" hat.
Something robust, able to handle poor weather and give decent sun protection. I also didn't want to spend much dough.
I wanted a fur felt and my search was further complicated by my larger size (7 5/8, thanks Dad).
I ran across an...
Lol, the "smiley face" at the end was meant to convey a joking tone.
I guess it didn't quite come through. No worries.
The missus and I have a very healthy and equal relationship in all aspects. The Ex was another story....:)
Cheers.
This might seem "johnny come lately" but: The Watchmen, Rorschach's Stingy Brim Fedora
Or is it a porkpie? I can never tell.....
Really like the coat and gloves too.
Hello all, just joined the lounge.
I'm military, RCAF, so hats are kind of a part of my professional life: Beret, Wedge cap, forage cap, Bush, tilley, ball cap, etc...
As a result, I don't really wear hats outside of work. It's my rebellious streak that does it I guess. I just flat out don't...
Just started acquiring hats. First step into the pond was a Dobbs fedora:
Looks post 1972 by it's sweat band, markings and tag. Maybe even more modern. The "rev 1-83" on the tag would seem to indicate newer than 1983, unless it means something else. Googling "Calvert" brings back nothing...
