vintage hat sizes vs. modern hat sizes

Hmmm... I've encountered the exact same thing, multiple times. My head measures exactly 22 inches, and indeed, in a vintage hat I wear a 7 1/8. In a new hat, such as a Stetson or Akubra, I wear a 7 or a 56 cm. Unless every old hat I have ever tried on has actually shrunk a size, I think the...

Don't you guys hate it when the seller isn't quite honest?

Ebay can be a real roll of the dice. I accept that going into any purchase. It is a little like gambling. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I've won big on ebay, but I have also lost big too. It is the nature of the beast. That said, some sellers are far better than others. The good ones...

    L.L. Bean Flying Tiger Jacket.

You may want to comb ebay for one of these. You can get an amazing deal on an older one, when they were made in the U.S.A, and had a trimmer fit than they do now. They also had numbered sizes then. I picked up one in near mint condition with a Thinsulate liner for $45.00!

    Detective hats

I'm sure this has been covered a million times in here, but since we're on the topic of Bogart, who would you all say makes the best replica of the Maltese Falcon hat? And what color would you say it is? Gray?

My first Fedora - c/o Mr Art Fawcett

Spectacular hat. You didn't dink around at all. Good choice.

Reactions when you first start wearing brimmed hats.

I live in Austin, Texas. No one says a word about my hat. It would take a lot more than a fedora to make me seem weird here. There is an absolutely pitiful hat shop here in Austin, though, and it is bringing hats back in fashion in this town, which I suppose is good. But their selection is...

What should one do to an old coat or new jacket to protect it or restore it?

Ha! Good point. I almost started a thread about this very conundrum (although, I'm sure one exists somewhere in this forum already!). It is a Catch 22 of sorts, if you wear your vintage/antique clothes, invariably they will get worn in and damaged. But, if you hide them in your closet, they may...

What leather conditioner do you use?

Thanks for merging the threads. I have since treated the jacket a second time with Pecards and it made a huge difference. I 'm trying not to apply too much conditioner at once. The creaking has gone away almost completely, and the Pecards has sunk into the cracked surface. How often is too often...

    Aero 50's Half Belt

So which leathers have you narrowed it down to?

    Aero web site

The new site is a HUGE improvement. I agree with what others are saying, though. I would have pictures of each jacket model in all the various hide colors. Standard size charts and the ability zoom or view a larger image would be really good. Perhaps dedicate a page to all of the liner options...

    Schott "Classic Truck Jacket"

Yeah, I've never seen this jacket from Schott. Not enough leather jacket producers make halfbelts! I'm really curious about this jacket.

    Show me your favorite jacket

Orlan, is that original or a repro. Either way, very nice!!

    Show me your favorite jacket

Easy. I love an excuse to show this one again. It is my horsehide Sears Hercules Halfbelt. Of course, finding another in this shape would be challenging.

What leather conditioner do you use?

Old Horsehide: Any way to stop the cracking and creaking? Hey Loungers, just wanted to pose a question to those more experienced than I. My awesome Sears Hercules halfbelt is in such terrific shape, but I'm noticing that the more I wear it, the more it is exhibiting tiny cracks in the surface...

    Full Brim vs. Stingy Brim

Really, though, shouldn't crown height and brim width be a matter of the wearer's head shape? There are suggested guidelines for these things somewhere, right? For me personally, I look best with a 5 inch crown and about a 2 inch brim. I've tried taller and wider, and it wasn't pretty. I...

Optimo, Just like new, 71/8,100% Beaver, Neptune Blue

That Optimo is flippin' gorgeous. My size too, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of scratch on a hat (at least not yet, anyway!). I will say that it looks sublime on your head, so you may want to reconsider selling it. I get what you're saying, though, when you have an ideal picture...

    Dilemma, Dilemma, Dilemma,

Good choice. Don't get me wrong, Wested can make a fine product. I have had one of their Indy jackets since 2006, and I still wear it frequently. I have since acquired some higher-end jackets, though, and frankly there is no comparison. So, if you are accustomed to the quality of an Aero, than...

is silence a valuable form of feedback?

Good topic. I think that if someone is posting and asks for feedback, it should be given honestly and constructively. However, if a new member is posting an introductory message and is excited about something that many veterans around here think is quite ghastly, I would think a kind hello and...

    Dilemma, Dilemma, Dilemma,

I'll second that. If you have an Aero already, a Wested simply won't cut it.
