Thanks for the kind words! I have done a little research, but am stumped by what appear to be two conflicting messages.
I’ve read that the stars in the shield indicate pre-1950, while the plastic over liner indicates post-1953 or so.
It seems to me it’s probably either late 40s or early 50s...
Today’s hat is a Stetson Twenty Five Open Road. Anyone have an idea on date for this one?
I rebashed it a couple days ago, and wore it out for the first time today. I was very happy to find this one in LO. Fit perfect without any stretching.
Nice boots, Bowen. Great minds think alike today.
My understanding is that most boots are made from the main body of the elephant, while the ears and trunk are used for smoother items like wallets or purses, etc.
I am on the lookout for a nice round toe pair. I try to have a square and a...
Wearing Black Jack elephant boots today. These are fairly new, and my first pair of elephants. I always expected “tough” to equal “stiff.” These are very soft and supple, while still having a very rugged exterior.
Show your elephants, FL!
Today, it’s a vintage custom from Robert’s Hat Shop in Abilene, TX.
The Robert’s is 100% beaver, made around 1960 or so. It has a great hand and is very comfortable to wear.
I don’t have any hippo, Rob, but I have used the Bick's Exotic spray for my elephant boots to good effect. Spray, set, brush.
I’d bet a suede shoe brush would work to raise the nap.
Good luck; those are sharp boots!
Wearing a Stetson Nutria today. The crease is not on the center line. I’ve considered fixing it, but I also kinda like the asymmetry. Do you strive for mostly perfect creases, or think that asymmetry adds character?
Sorry for your disappointment, Rob. I had the exact same thing happen to me. Bought a 9.5EE cheap, thinking there was a good chance they’d fit my 10D, but they were ridiculously small. Turned out to be women’s (and not an EE width either). My wife normally wears a women’s 8.5, but is comfortable...
Not much love for square toes around here, but wanted to share these arapaima / pirarucu boots from Black Jack. I was skeptical about the fish leather, but it’s soft, durable, comfortable, and gets loads of compliments. Most pictures I’ve seen online are when people don’t care for the boots and...
Here are some examples that may help. The darker are ML Leddy and well-worn. The lighter pair are brand new using a much less expensive ostrich intended to be work in the muck boots. They’re from Black Jack and super well-made, just less expensive skins.
Vintage modern Stetson 4X with a replacement hatband from a seller called westernhatbands. I think this is close to the Akubra Cattleman style without the vents. I have a couple vintage westerns coming that I may rebash into a similar style.
