    Show us your Guns!

I think Alec Kerr sold my Alex. Henry to Jaques Lott, but I'm not sure. "Jack" was very closed mouth about guns he bought, sold, and traded. We used to shoot up at Soledad Canyon, although a lot of our testing was done on the outdoor range in Burbank (!) up on Country Club Drive, courtesy of...

    Show us your Guns!

Actually I consigned it at Kerr's Sporting Goods in Beverly Hills (tells you how long ago I sold it). Somewhere I think I still have a few rounds, some brass, and probably two bullet molds -- one, which Howard French gave me, has a plug to make hollow-points; the hollow point being exactly the...

    Show us your Guns!

My all-time favourite BP rifle was my old Alex. Henry .450-3 1/4 falling block. Sights were dead on at 50 - 100- 150 yards. Never should have sold it. *sigh*

    1954 Mercedes Gull-Wing 300SL

A really nice XK120 will cruise in at the $90k mark, with older restored examples punching above their weight at around $125k; at the end of the day it's all about condition, both cosmetic and mechanical. A car with only average cosmetics but spot on mechanically would probably fetch something...

The owner of a 300SL gullwing revels in a triumph of style over speed... ;)

    1954 Mercedes Gull-Wing 300SL

1968 I bought a 1960 300SL roadster for $3,800 and passed on a 1955 "gullwing" at $4,750. Gold was pegged in those days at $35 an ounce, and if I had bought 100 ounces of gold it would be worth approximately $150,000 today. That said, I think the car on ebay is a tad high, but then auctions...

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

I love pre-war coupés; in my book they are just about the ideal long distance touring car. Comfortable to ride in and with a huge trunk-- which allows one to over-pack, as well as providing space for things like ice chests, deck chairs, spare pars, tools, you name it, and it all goes in the back.

Is 40 year old box of Montecruz cigars worth anything?

The box is probably worth more than the cigars...

    Who is today's Steve McQueen?

McQueen was waaay cool off screen. None of today's crop of actors even come close.

    Staged TV

All of the shows you've mentioned were carefully planned out months in advance, right down to the producers creating the situations which added dramatic content to the programs. And, just like Britain's Got Talent -- or any of the populist trash you've decried-- they were all carefully cast...

    Staged TV

It is, and it is probably the granddaddy of 'em all. Camera crews are imbedded with police departments, and record what happens, no scripts involved. Well, everyday folks can lead interesting lives, or they can lead lives of quiet desperation. Most, sadly really don't lead interesting lives, but...

    Show us your Guns!

Leather, with age, will dry out, crack, and shrink. My SAA rides in a holster that is at least 80 years old and it has not suffered from an annual application of Lexol. If you are concerned about the holster loosing its shape try this -- after treating your holster with your preferred leather...

    Staged TV

Matt, you could make the same argument about animated films. Television works to a different metric than film, with vastly smaller budgets and incredibly tight delivery schedules. Depending on the program content a producer is lucky to get $2m for 13 half hour episodes with most shows budgeted...

    Show us your Guns!

Your holster was made for VL&A by the Herman Heister Company in Denver Colorado, probably in the 1920s or 30s (Heister went out of business in 1955; as I recall VL&A closed up shop in 1960). Heister holsters rank among the holy grails of holster collecting. Yours, prior to "restoration" would...

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

I'd suggest you go with radial tires. The ones fitted to the car in my avatar are 6.50x16 radials, and not only transformed the handling, they lessened the steering effort as well.

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

There is quite a bit of chatter about radios, so perhaps I may make a comment or two? First, when your car was new would it have had a fender mounted whip antenna, or would the antenna have been mounted under the car, or above the windshield? Second, if you really want to enjoy listening to the...

    Cuban Cigar

Fruit from the forbidden tree is always thought to taste better, even if it's sour apples. The run-of-the-mill Cuban cigar is nothing to write home about, in much the same way that during the Cold War Russian vodka achieved almost mythic status, despite the fact that most of it tasted like...

The Health of Military Surplus Stores

Our local mall is on its last legs -- the 5 screen cinema closed two weeks ago, and nearly half the stores are vacant. But... a surplus store opened there two months ago, and this week end moved to a larger store in the mall. Go figure.

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Last movie I watched? Easy. Thursday night I went to my local cinema and saw "Singing In The Rain". Well worth the $12 ticket price.
