Tomasso, I like the word foreign as it implies a city from a different country as it has the old Spanish and French influences. The word different works too. A wonderful city in any definition.
I have a home in Texas but am always abroad. If I had to live in the US I cant imagine living anywhere else but Texas with the exception of New Orleans. What a fascinating and wonderful place. The most "foreign" city in the US I think. What history. I hope you enjoy your stay there.
I'm a scotch man but for some reason really love a good Bloody Mary out here in the tropics. I think it has to do with the salt. I make what I think is a good one using olive juice and Old Bay seasoning.
I have no experience with the Colt or Smith but do have a very nice Webley MK IV of Boer War vintage that was brought back from Africa. Unfortunately my friend had it cut to shoot .45ACP prior to giving it to me as a gift. I was surprised how accurate it shot and I agree with previous posters...
I never did figure out how I was able to have one up so high (my eyelid) as most leeches are always close to the ground. Must have been on a branch or something. Bled a lot too. Disgusted even the New Guineans and they are hard to disgust.
I guess this thead is made up of older posts that have been now revived. Very interesting photos of historical USMC uniforms. I notice some are being worn by folks that I assume never served. Never understood that.
I have had a number of encounters with leeches in tropical places but one I remember well was in a very muddy village in New Guinea where after hiking in and trying to wash up I found I had one on my eyelid. It was disgusting even for me.
I spent over three years out on Shemya at the end of the Aleutian Island chain and the thing that will always stick out in my mind was the terrible weather. Cold winters with high winds and miserable summers with fog that lasts for months. As other posters have mentioned it doesnt get the same...
I can understand an African shooting safari is not for everyone and have only done one myself. After learning a bit more about what you are doing wish I could have all that safari money back and be able to spend a weekend with you gentlemen. It looks like a lot of fun. I wish you many happy...
Renault, I really enjoyed the photos but for the life of me do not understand why someone would enjoy reenactment of such things. It is possible to live this.
I know I am getting into the topic rather late but I tip anyone who delivers things to my house and I also tip fellows like AC repairmen who perform services. This doesnt happen too often as I have never really lived in the house I own but use it as my "base camp" and the place to store my...
Kitty as you asked I've spent nearly 2 years out on Wake Island the famous WWII battlefield site in the far western Pacific and was recently selected for a position wintering over in Antarctica. Its quite an extreme change in climate and for some could be considered a crazy thing to happen but...
I wouldnt even know where to start with this topic. I've been out on a tiny island in the Pacific for nearly two years and am headed to Antarctica to spend the winter in a couple of weeks. I guess I would need to have "crazy things" defined.
Phantomfixer, there is a protocol for what to do with human remains out here on Wake and they are sent to a lab somewhere that identifies them to some degree. I dont know if they then try to do any kind of DNA testing to determine actual identity. WWII has been such a long time ago not sure how...
I have been watching the series out here on Wake Island which is quite an interesting experience. We should never forget the great sacrifices made by our troops and at Wake Island contractors as well. We are still finding their bones.
A fascinating discussion and really hard to try and predict the outcome. From reading the above I see now that the entire event in Libya probably started from a series of fashion faux pas' by the good colonel. People can only take so much!
"Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea." to me is really the key. I loved the new remake of "The Four Feathers" where it is quoted. The guys that didnt serve had a chance to to do so and for whatever reasons did not. Several posters have...
