What to do when a leather tote's color rubs off on clothing

I usually put a coat of neutral shoe polish on my shoes if I will wear light colored trousers. It works on shoes, it should work on that bag.

    loop for pocket watch chain

Another option would be to use a leather fob and a fob charm that hangs loose. You would need to hold on when you take the watch out but you may find you hold your watch tighter than you thought anyway.

What do you think of gold and diamond watches for men?

A Rolex is the best sport watch but a dress watch is needed for some occasions. If my other accessories are gold I like a small gold filled watch. If I am wearing silver accessories I use a slightly larger stainless cased watch, but it is always a thin one. I always use leather bands on my...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

As Tom Lehrer said "base eight is the same as base ten, if you're missing two fingers. New math taught the concepts better than many of the current curriculums. Watch anyone under 30 trying to make change if you think that is not true. Remember, there are 10 types of people. Ones that know...

What's something modern you won't miss when it becomes obsolete?

Trench watches and other forms of bracelet watches have become obsolete. Unfortunately they have been replaced by "smart" phones.

    9mm or 45cal

I have been liking 40 cal more and more. Almost as easy to carry as a 9 mm and almost as powerful as a 45 cal. I would never fire a warning shot as a bullet should be fired being mindful of where the bullet will go if it passes through.

    WWII era Civilian tents

I have found some 1920s and 1930s pictures with wall tents like the one I have that appear to be white. The age of my tent would make it appropriate to use since it is the same age as a late '20s tent in WWII. It is interesting to research the civilian end of a period that has such exact...

Of Sheep-Dip, Rot-Gut, and Furniture Polish. The worst of the worst.

East Africa is not noted for fine beers. When you combine the beer being brewed in a country that is mostly Muslim with government price controls I guess expectations for the beer should not be high.

Of Sheep-Dip, Rot-Gut, and Furniture Polish. The worst of the worst.

The wost beers I ever had were in Kenya. The premium beer was called Tusker and the generic was called white cap (white cap had no form of label at all, as generic as it gets). They were a great time saver because you got a hangover as soon as you drank them. No need to spend time being drunk.

    WWII era Civilian tents

After the sunburn that my wife got this weekend doing a homefront interpretation/display we are in agreement that the next addition needs to be a tent. We do have a white canvas tent that we use for Western and fur trapper events and I was wondering if anyone knows if white was a common color...

Perhaps people see the 24 hour bail bondsmen because they have had to look for them?

People get bonded out at night instead of spending the night in lockup.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

There are lots of good truck stops across the country. It is sometimes hit and miss finding them. I usually look for places with rigs that have stickers that imply they have a family. If I see lot lizards I look for another place.

Show us your Thrift and/or yard sale finds

I had some really nice finds in the closeout (sold by the pound) section of a local thrift shop. A Wilton Country Gentleman hat ant the sterling jewelry that is with it. There were also lots on unremarkable items with them. At $1.38 a pound I buy a lot extra there.

    What's for Dinner?

I am back on solid food. I kept it simple tonight, a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich . Swiss, cheddar, and provalone with ramano shaved on top. Tomorrow I will smoke a pork butt for 10 hours.

    What's for Dinner?

I had to check out the food porn. I am on a clear liquid diet until tomorrow afternoon. Enjoy your food. I made unflavored geletin with broth and drippings from a smoked pork roast. Tastes like meat but i am looking forward to chewing tomorrow. Enjoy whatever you eat tonight.

    Living a Ration Book Life

What is the cutoff? It is really all shades of gray. There are forms of black-market today that people use without thinking about it. Many people today don't realize that if they buy knockoff purses or cologne they may be funding terrorist organizations. It is likely that peoples views would...

How to Know if You're in The Right Bar

The times that I know that I am in the right bar is when a piper asks if I will play a set with him and he hands me his flask before I start the first roll-off.

    Living a Ration Book Life

If the cheese example is not to your liking as an example what about the cow parties I described. I was not born yet but my grandmother got several jars of jam and people who owed her meat when they needed to cull an old cow. It is still an example of a practice that does not follow the letter...

    Living a Ration Book Life

I have thought of another black market scenario. In the 1970s my family usually bought meat in bulk so it was cheaper. The meat was cheaper than cheese. We would trade steaks to a family for "government surplus" cheese. A family that could not afford hamburger got steak and we got some of their...
