Unfortunately with the way things are now, a lot of good music is not being recorded anymore. With the collapse of the record industry, it just doesn't pay to make a record these days unless you are one of the top selling music acts (for whatever that's worth). People believe that they should...

I didn't mean for the idea of "self-medicating" music to be negative. I just didn't care for my examples. Music is my religion.

Believe it or not, Disco and Swing do share a common bond. The people created both to help self-medicate. Both are happy-fun-time music created during times of disparity. Swing came about during the depression and continued right up until the end of WW2, and Disco came at the time of the end of...

Yeah, harmony was the correct term, I just remembered wrong. Perhaps those three things were just the elements of music, not the definition. I took that class a long time ago. For the most part I like music to be strong in all three, so maybe I was projecting there a bit.

Gordon Lightfoot is a highly respected songwriter. He'll be in the books. The only problem with the 70’s singer/songwriters (many of which were good) is that it opened the floodgates of performers that had no business writing songs to write songs. Unfortunately we’ve been there ever since.

With regards to Revolution #9, I think most of you guys have put more thought into it than Lennon did. It was originally just an indulgent exercise meant to get under the skin of the establishment (perhaps). It appears that Lennon did a good job as the topic keeps being revisited.

I was just categorizing rap by the definition of music as it was taught to me in a music appreciation class. Music by definition is composed of the three elements that I mentioned. If rap music is missing an element, I surmised that it is not “music” by definition, but a musical art form. I...

Technically, rap isn’t music by the definition, so I’ll agree with you there lol. It’s a musical art form. Music technically needs to be composed of three elements: melody, rhythm, and chords. Rap hardly ever employs all three at the same time. Even though I never liked rap (at all), it was at...

One of the overlooked talents of all time is Georgie Fame. Georgie hailed from England and is the real “Mod-Father”, even moreso than Paul Weller. Georgie started with little combo beat groups. Some of his earliest records even included ska. He recorded “Madness” before the band Madness did...

The world's greatest percussionist passed away last year. His name was Francisco Aguabella. Blanket statements like the one I just made can be hard to defend. But he's my pick (and many other's pick as well). Cheers

I can't think of a band I like less. Only Genesis (Phil Collins & Peter Gabriel) are in the same boat for suckatude. (Sorry if anybody is a fan). Just not my cup of tea.

I’ll raise you “Calypso Blues”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf5ivCfZ_cw That’s Jack Costanzo on Conga. I had the pleasure of meeting him about ten years ago. My favorite version is Willie Rosario’s. Love the Bari sax that comes in at the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3lGFVYMKHE

Your point is well taken. You can't compare apples and oranges. I just disagree with the idea that their cultural significance will dwindle. I see kids that were born in the 80's, 90's, and later listening to their music all of the time.
